The U.S. House of Representatives has just sent a notice to all members regarding the ban on the use of Meta Platforms' WhatsApp messaging app on all of the body's devices.
The US House of Representatives announced that, according to an assessment by the Office of Cybersecurity, the WhatsApp application poses a high risk due to a lack of transparency in how it protects user data, the failure to encrypt stored data, and other potential security vulnerabilities.
The U.S. House of Representatives recommends using alternative messaging apps such as Microsoft's Teams, Amazon's Wickr, Signal, Apple's iMessage, and FaceTime.
A Meta spokesperson said the tech giant opposes the House move, noting that the WhatsApp platform offers a higher level of security than other approved applications.
In January, a WhatsApp official discovered that the spyware company Paragon Solutions was targeting a large number of WhatsApp users, including journalists and members of civil society organizations.
Previously, the US House of Representatives has also banned certain apps on its members' devices, such as the short video app TikTok, which was banned in 2022 due to security concerns.
