| South Korea is striving to promote gender equality within its legislature. |
The announcement ceremony was held at the South Korean National Assembly headquarters with the goal of advocating for equal political participation for men and women.
The Korean Women's Council – a group of female lawmakers – pointed out the significant gender imbalance in the country's National Assembly and called on the National Assembly to pass the Act on Supporting Gender Equality Participation.
In his congratulatory speech, Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea Kim Jin-pyo stated that gender equality in the legislature is emerging as a new theme in the history of world democracy.
According to Kim Ki-hyun, a representative of the National Power Party in parliament, if women's representation is not adequately guaranteed, the realization of democracy will remain a long way off.
Emphasizing support for equal proportions of male and female lawmakers, Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), argued that this ensures equal participation for both genders, where women and men share power and responsibility.
Meanwhile, Lee Jeong-mi, a representative of the Justice Party, urged every political party to seriously heed the National Human Rights Commission's recommendations to ensure equal participation of women when nominating candidates for public offices and to clearly state implementation plans in their party charters and regulations.
