Lunar New Year goods are now on the shelves.

Many supermarkets, convenience stores, and traditional markets have started stocking their shelves with Tet (Lunar New Year) goods early. Items for Tet celebrations such as confectionery, candies, dried foods, fish sauce, fruits, gift baskets, etc., are in abundant supply, ready for the peak shopping season.

Abundant goods, prices slightly increased.

At Co.opmart Kien Giang, located on Nguyen Trung Truc Street, Rach Gia Ward, the Tet holiday atmosphere is evident in every section, with Tet goods attractively arranged and abundant in variety. Prices of essential consumer goods have increased by 3-5% compared to normal days. Some product groups have seen higher increases as Tet approaches, mainly fresh and processed foods, which have increased by 5-10%, concentrated in livestock, poultry, and seafood. These product groups are directly affected by supply, demand, and seasonality.

Prices of goods increase during the Lunar New Year due to a combination of factors such as the continued high demand for animal feed, raw materials, and transportation; higher-than-usual shopping demand during Tet; and the strong recovery of the tourism industry in the province, leading to increased demand for food, accommodation, and consumer goods.

Deputy Director of Co.opmart Kien Giang, Tran Thanh Thuy, shared: “The Business Department of the Co.opmart system works closely with suppliers to proactively secure goods for Tet. Early preparation helps ensure sufficient supply at stable prices, minimizing fluctuations during the peak shopping season at the end of the year.”

Participating in the province's market stabilization program, Co.opmart Kien Giang is a prime example of maintaining stable prices during the Tet holiday. The Tet price stabilization and sales program is implemented with a commitment to keeping prices stable, even 5-10% lower than the market price for some essential goods. Co.opmart Kien Giang also organizes mobile sales to the Kien Hai special zone to help people access price-stabilized goods. Ms. Tran Thanh Thuy stated: “Tet goods prices have increased by more than 40% compared to normal days, focusing on essential items such as rice, pork, eggs, and vegetables… The focus remains on high-quality Vietnamese products, with diverse price segments, and a flexible combination of direct sales at the supermarket and online sales.”

Besides focusing on price stabilization, retail systems are also boosting promotions to stimulate consumer demand. With the theme "Come to Co.op and bring Tet home," the program lasts nearly two months with many rotating discount periods: Fresh food is discounted by 15-20%; Tet confectionery and jams are discounted by 20-30% in combos; household goods and clothing are discounted by 40-49%.

Gift-giving programs, loyalty point programs, online sales, and cashless payments are being implemented simultaneously. Inside the supermarket, a Tet market-themed space with apricot and peach blossoms, calligraphers offering auspicious characters, and customized gift basket wrapping services contribute to a complete shopping experience for customers until the 28th and 29th of the lunar calendar.

Consumers are shopping cautiously.

The shopping atmosphere is just beginning to pick up, with people mainly browsing and comparing prices. Ms. Trinh Xuan Mai, a resident of Rach Gia ward, is browsing Tet (Lunar New Year) items at Co.opmart Kien Giang. At this time, Ms. Mai is not in a hurry to buy anything but is checking the prices of gift baskets and various food items. A few others are also shopping at the Tet market, comparing prices as they go.

At specialty stores, purchasing power is moderate. Ms. Do Thi Bich Tran, owner of the OCOP Nang Kien Giang store in Rach Gia ward, said that her store prepared its Tet holiday goods early, stocking up on dried goods, fish sauce, and local specialty gifts. This year, prices have increased by 3-5% compared to normal days. Customers mainly come to browse and compare prices, not buying as much as during peak season.

According to Ms. Tran, consumer sentiment this year is more cautious, with spending being more carefully considered. Many families shop gradually, waiting until closer to Tet to decide to make large purchases.

Observations show that Tet (Lunar New Year) goods are appearing on shelves early this year, with abundant supply and prices fluctuating within control. Although purchasing power is not yet "heating up," with price stabilization programs, frequent promotions, and proactive preparations by businesses, the Tet market is expected to be more vibrant in the peak weeks, especially in the gift and local specialty segments.

Strengthen market control.

The period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year) remains a sensitive time when shopping demand surges, potentially putting pressure on the prices of some fresh produce, processed foods, and transportation services. According to Phan Quoc Tho, Deputy Head of the Provincial Market Management Department: “To prevent price spikes, speculation, and hoarding, market management forces are implementing intensive inspection and control campaigns before, during, and after Tet, focusing on key routes and areas, traditional markets, shopping centers, warehouses, and e-commerce businesses. The focus is on controlling price listings, selling at the listed price, origin, quality, and food safety. We are determined to crack down on counterfeit goods, substandard goods, and goods of unknown origin.”

The Provincial Market Management Department is strengthening inter-agency coordination, leveraging the role of the Provincial Steering Committee 389, maintaining a hotline to receive public feedback, and continuing post-Tet inspections to prevent instances of avoiding inspections during peak periods and then re-offending. These comprehensive solutions are expected to stabilize the market, protect consumer rights, and create a healthy business environment during the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026.
