In Huong Son district, heavy rain combined with strong winds caused over 390 hectares of spring rice to be flattened. The affected areas are mainly concentrated in communes such as Son Bang, Tan My Ha, Chau Binh, and An Hoa Thinh… This is the time when the rice is ripening, with heavy grains in the ears. The flattened rice at this time will inevitably affect the final yield.
Mr. Dao Van Dung (Thinh Bang village, Son Bang commune) said: "This season, my family cultivated nearly 1 hectare of rice. The heavy rain and strong winds over the past two days have caused 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of rice to be flattened. The rice was in the ripening stage, turning yellow, and it's heartbreaking to see. Now, all we can do is hope the weather will stabilize in the coming days so that we don't suffer further damage."
The tornado ripped off the roofs of 25 houses and outbuildings belonging to residents of Huong Son.
According to preliminary reports from the local authorities, a tornado also occurred in the district, causing damage to 25 houses and outbuildings. Many power poles and large trees were knocked down, affecting the lives and daily activities of the people. In Son Hong commune, one household also lost four spotted deer to a lightning strike.
Immediately after the natural disaster occurred, Huong Son district directed its forces to help people overcome the consequences, repair houses, clean up the environment, and stabilize their lives.
Mr. Nguyen Kieu Hung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Huong Son district, said: “For houses with damaged roofs, the local authorities have assisted people in repairing them. Regarding areas where crops have been flattened, the district has directed specialized departments to coordinate closely with communes to assess the specific extent of damage to each type of crop. For rice and other crops flattened by strong winds, we are focusing on guiding farmers on timely technical measures such as clearing waterways to quickly drain water from flooded areas; depending on the specific situation of each rice field, we are advising farmers on solutions to restore the plants or minimize losses.”
Rice fields in Nam Phuc Thang commune (Cam Xuyen district) have been flattened.
In Ky Anh district, heavy rain and strong winds caused over 110 hectares of rice fields to be flattened. Immediately after receiving the information, the district promptly directed local authorities to urge farmers to clear waterways and drainage canals to drain water from the fields. They also regularly inspected the fields to implement effective solutions to mitigate the damage.
According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ky Anh town, due to the influence of the late-season cold front, heavy rain combined with thunderstorms and strong winds occurred in the town on the evening of May 10th, causing nearly 40 hectares of spring rice to be damaged.
In Ky Ha commune, 6.5 hectares of spring rice crops were damaged by lodging.
Of these, the localities with the largest areas affected by flooding are: Ky Ninh 10.5 ha; Ky Trinh 10 ha; Ky Nam 8 ha; Ky Ha 6.5 ha...
Agricultural experts advise farmers to harvest the remaining spring rice crop early.
Ms. Nguyen Hoang Anh, Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Ky Anh Town, said: "The town has directed localities to mobilize farmers to go to the fields to support the flattened rice crops to minimize damage. At the same time, we advise people to take advantage of favorable weather to harvest ripe rice fields early..."
Reportedly, in the spring of 2025, Ky Anh town planted 1,162 hectares of rice, with the main varieties being: Khang Dan, Xuan Mai, HN6, PC6, BT 09, ADI 168...
Not only in Huong Son, Ky Anh district and Ky Anh town, heavy rains have also caused many hectares of rice fields to be flattened in other localities: Cam Xuyen nearly 40 hectares, Huong Khe more than 20 hectares...
The lodging of rice plants during the ripening stage will more or less affect the final yield.
According to the forecast of the Ha Tinh Meteorological and Hydrological Station, the province will continue to experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms in the coming days. To minimize damage to the yield and quality of spring crops, the Department of Agriculture and Environment requests the People's Committees of districts, towns, and cities to guide and urge people to regularly monitor weather developments to proactively respond in a timely manner, and to clear waterways to minimize localized flooding that affects the growth and development of crops.
For areas where rice plants have been flattened, guide farmers to prop up/tie 4-5 clumps of rice plants to help them accumulate dry matter in the grains and reduce the rate of damaged or germinated rice, minimizing yield losses. For areas where the rice is ripe, take advantage of favorable weather conditions to harvest quickly and efficiently to minimize losses.
For corn fields, continue to care for the plants according to proper technical procedures to create favorable conditions for recovery; in areas with excessive lodging (over 50%), harvest the corn for animal feed and prepare the land, selecting suitable crops for replanting…
