- In June 2012, the United Nations declared March 20th as the International Day of Happiness. To date, 193 member states, including Vietnam, have committed to supporting, acting, and making greater efforts to build a world of harmony, improve the quality of life, build a just society, achieve sustainable development, and bring happiness to humanity.
International Happiness Day originated from Bhutan, a small kingdom nestled deep in the eastern Himalayas, which is considered to have a high happiness index based on factors such as health, mental well-being, education , environment, governance quality, and living standards. The United Nations chose March 20th as International Happiness Day because it coincides with the spring equinox – the most special day of the year. On this day, the sun is directly above the equator, and the length of day and night are equal, representing the balance and harmony of the universe. This also symbolizes the balance between yin and yang, between light and darkness, between dreams and reality. With these special meanings, International Happiness Day conveys the message that balance and harmony are key to happiness.
In Vietnam, on December 26, 2013, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 2589 approving the Project "Organizing activities to celebrate International Happiness Day on March 20th annually". This project aims to continue implementing the goal of developing social welfare, building prosperous, progressive, and happy Vietnamese families; raising awareness throughout society about International Happiness Day, thereby encouraging concrete and practical actions to build happy families and communities; and calling for cooperation and assistance from organizations and individuals both domestically and internationally to organize activities on International Happiness Day. In 2014, Vietnam officially organized activities to celebrate International Happiness Day on March 20th for the first time with the theme "Love and Sharing".
The theme for International Happiness Day 2026 is "Happiness for Every Family." This year's promotional activities include: highlighting good examples and good deeds; promoting activities that build happy families and communities; criticizing manifestations and behaviors of domestic violence and violations of family laws; and encouraging individuals, organizations, and communities to engage in positive activities that bring happiness to loved ones, families, and communities. The purpose of celebrating International Happiness Day is to join the world in expressing the desire, belief, and determination to strive for a peaceful world, free from war and poverty; a prosperous and sustainable world; a world where all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion, can fully enjoy happiness.
In response to this year's International Day of Happiness, localities throughout the province have focused on disseminating information about the history and significance of International Day of Happiness on March 20th; the policies and laws of the Party and State on social welfare and building prosperous, progressive, and happy families; encouraging all individuals, organizations, and communities to actively contribute to the happiness of their loved ones, families, and communities; integrating the content of promoting the purpose and significance of International Day of Happiness on March 20th with activities implementing the "Learning and following the thoughts, ethics, and style of Ho Chi Minh," linked with the "National Unity for Building a Culturally Rich Life" movement; "Building New Rural Areas," etc. The dissemination of information relates to individual happiness, family happiness, clan happiness, community happiness, professional happiness, school happiness, and happiness in social activities. This also includes highlighting good examples and good deeds, promoting happy families and communities; criticizing and combating manifestations and acts of domestic violence and violations of family laws… along with many other practical and meaningful activities. Through these propaganda activities, we contribute to spreading the values of happiness to individuals, families, and society as a whole.
It can be said that, in social life, happiness is the ultimate goal for everyone, and people, regardless of the historical period, have always sought happiness and wished to be happy. Therefore, together with the whole country, each citizen should strive to demonstrate this through meaningful actions for their family and homeland in the current period.
