For Do Minh Duc (from Hai Phong), backpacking is not just a simple vacation for rest and relaxation, but an opportunity to enrich his knowledge and acquire useful skills.
Go to grow
Duc joined the community of travel enthusiasts three years ago when he met a boss who was a huge motorcycle lover. His companion was a Honda CM125.
For Minh Duc (left), gaining more life experiences after each backpacking trip is the greatest happiness.
The image of "bikers"—people passionate about riding, especially large-displacement motorcycles—inspired him. Duc understood that while pursuing a spirit of adventure and freedom, bikers must also have social responsibility, principles, and discipline. To ensure their passion thrives, he and his friends always remind each other to stay alert and cautious while riding.
The compact and maneuverable nature of motorbikes allows young, adventurous people to easily navigate every nook and cranny to explore the places they visit. Duc enjoys chatting with locals to gain a deeper understanding of the culture and lifestyle of his destinations. He considers them excellent guides, helping him discover every turn, famous food spots, and scenic spots. Duc particularly appreciates the saying: "Four wheels move your body, but two wheels move your soul."
Motorbike touring provides young people with opportunities to increase social connections.
A memorable experience for Duc was his trip to Mui Yen (more than 50 km from the center of Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province) this summer. The road was full of rocks and red soil, making the journey quite difficult. At one point, his motorbike broke down, and his phone lost signal. Luckily, Duc received help from a local resident. What pleased him most about the trip was being able to immerse himself in the beautiful, unspoiled nature of the area. "Facing challenges helped me develop skills in handling unexpected situations. Going on a backpacking trip requires thorough preparation in all aspects; you can't be overconfident," Duc concluded.
Enrich your emotions
Besides improving her time and money management skills and planning abilities, backpacking trips with her best friend are a precious gift in the youth of Nguyen Thy Thien Thao (a student at Saigon University).
Thảo loves the feeling of leaving the city behind, leaving the hurried pace of urban life behind. She believes many exciting things await her, something that no pre-planned tour can offer. Everyone tries to maintain a suitable speed, never speeding or overtaking recklessly, enjoying the scenery stretching out before them and the joy of being together. The group feels closer as they conquer the roads together, sharing both joys and sorrows. While not yet a true "adventure traveler," these short trips on her familiar motorbike with friends have given Thảo more confidence to set goals for longer journeys in the future. "Putting aside daily pressures, young people are more open-minded, listen, and understand each other better," Thảo confided. The more they travel, the more Thảo and her friends love their homeland and yearn to contribute their youthful energy to the community.
These trips also serve as a way for young people to relieve stress and connect more with the community through the diverse real-life experiences they observe and reflect upon. Their abundant energy, thirst for knowledge, and understanding of technology are advantages of Gen Z. And they have effectively utilized these strengths to create journeys that are deeply personal to them.
Prepare thoroughly.
For safe motorcycle trips, preparation is crucial. Regardless of the type of motorcycle chosen, ensure the vehicle is of good quality, regularly maintained, and equipped with essential repair tools. Luggage should be light, versatile, and include a first-aid kit with medications and basic supplies for emergency use. Young travelers should carry all necessary identification documents and sufficient cash for expenses, rather than relying solely on cards or e-wallets for convenient payments. Devices such as phones, cameras, and chargers are also indispensable. Helmets and travel clothing should be of the highest quality possible. The market also offers specialized clothing to protect against wind, dust, and minimize injuries in case of a fall. Most importantly, travelers need good physical and mental health to complete their trip successfully and meaningfully.
