Happiness comes from a strong will.

Mr. Tran Huu Phuc (born in 1982, in Hung Tan village, Bu Dang commune, Dong Nai province) has suffered from muscle atrophy in both legs since childhood and has poor health. However, he has used his own hands and determination to overcome adversity, become a successful businessman, and support his children through university.

Phuc was paralyzed at the age of 3 after a severe fever. Despite his mobility disability, he was very determined. In 2005, Phuc applied for a job as a factory worker in Ho Chi Minh City, and later married Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh, who also suffered from muscular atrophy in both legs.

Mr. Phuc said: “Fortunately, my children were born perfectly healthy. After the birth of my daughter, I decided to move my family back to my wife's hometown in Hamlet 1, Minh Hung Commune, Bu Dang District, former Binh Phuoc Province (now Bu Dang Commune, Dong Nai Province) to start a new life. Our new life has taken root, with good things multiplying every day.”

The small man, weighing only 45kg, has never complained, grumbled, or felt inferior about his fate. On the contrary, his proactive approach to reality has forged in him a strong will and determination to overcome all obstacles in life. Years ago, Mr. Phuc had to use a wheelchair and worked various jobs to make a living: repairing motorbikes, selling ice cream, selling fried beef meatballs; raising cattle for breeding and grafting rose bushes for sale. In recent years, he has focused on cultivating durian and coffee on 7 acres of land behind his house.

Thanks to his diligent daily care, the durian orchard thrives. Each harvest yields more fruit than the last, a reward for this hardworking man.

Mr. Phuc said: “The durian orchard has been planted for 6 years. Last season, the first harvest yielded only 1.5 tons. However, this past season, thanks to learning how to pollinate flowers at night, fertilize, and water at the right time, the yield exceeded 5 tons, worth nearly 300 million VND. My whole family is very happy, thinking that the trees have rewarded our hard work.”

In the early years when the durian trees were still small, he promptly intercropped them with coffee to utilize the empty space between the rows of trees. According to him, coffee trees are short and yield a harvest quickly. When intercropped, they don't take up the photosynthesis area of the durian trees. Caring for the coffee trees is also not too difficult, and while fertilizing the durian trees, the coffee trees also benefit, thus reducing investment costs.

Wanting to contribute to her husband's livelihood, Ms. Anh built a pig farm. Currently, she is primarily responsible for raising five sows. She raises the piglets into market-ready pigs as soon as they give birth. She estimates that this year, if pig prices are good, her family will earn hundreds of millions of dong.

Mr. Phuc shared: “Currently, my eldest daughter is in her second year of university, and my youngest son is in 9th grade. To have the funds to support their education, we have to keep trying.”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien, Chairwoman of the Association for the Support of Disabled People, Orphans, and Poor Patients in Dong Nai Province, said: “Mr. Phuc is a prime example of unwavering resilience and optimism. In April 2024, he was selected as one of the individuals from the province to attend the 6th National Conference to Commend Outstanding Disabled People, Orphans, and Supporters, jointly organized by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (now the Ministry of Interior ).”
