With his extensive experience in Europe, both as a player and a coach, Kewell is expected to breathe new life into Hanoi FC's playing style and help the team assert its position not only in the V.League but also on the continental football map.
Born in 1978, Harry Kewell is a very familiar face to Vietnamese football fans. He has made 56 appearances for the Australian national team, scoring 17 goals and participating in two World Cups: 2006 and 2010. At club level, Kewell was a star for Leeds United before moving to Liverpool, where he won the UEFA Champions League in the 2004/2005 season and the FA Cup in 2005/2006.
After retiring from playing at the age of 36, Kewell quickly transitioned to coaching. He began in England with Crawley Town, Notts County, Oldham Athletic, and Barnet – clubs that provided him with invaluable experience in the demanding environment of football. In 2022, Kewell became an assistant to Ange Postecoglou at Celtic (Scotland), before moving to Japan to manage Yokohama F. Marinos in early 2024. Under Kewell's leadership, Marinos finished as runners-up in the 2023/2024 AFC Champions League – an achievement that affirmed his increasingly mature coaching abilities.
For Hanoi FC – the team that has dominated the V.League for over two decades – inviting Kewell to take the "hot seat" is not just a professional deal, but also a declaration of a long-term vision: to expand beyond domestic borders. A legend who once dominated the Premier League and competed in the World Cup is now appearing at Hang Day Stadium – this is proof of the appeal and ambition of Hanoi FC.
Alongside the changes on the coaching bench, Yusuke Adachi, who temporarily led the team for the last three matches, will return to his role as Technical Director. The Japanese expert will continue to be responsible for the professional direction of the first team and youth teams, ensuring continuity in the club's overall development strategy.
The signing of Harry Kewell not only marks a turning point in personnel but also opens a new chapter for Hanoi FC: from an icon of Vietnamese football, towards becoming a professional club of regional stature.
