Sancho is injured. |
According to The Athletic , Sancho suffered an injury during last week's friendly against Elche. In a challenge with Gonzalo Villar, the English player landed awkwardly and injured his shoulder. He was forced to leave the pitch before the end of the first half, even having to use his jersey as a makeshift sling for his arm.
Subsequent tests yielded positive results, confirming that Sancho did not dislocate his shoulder as initially feared. However, he still sustained damage to his shoulder joint and is expected to be sidelined for 2-3 weeks.
Although the injury is not serious, this period is long enough to cause Sancho to miss both legs of the Europa League quarter-final against Bologna, as well as the away match against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
This is a significant blow for manager Unai Emery, especially considering Sancho's good form. Before his injury, he impressed with two consecutive assists in matches against Lille and West Ham.
In the final stages of the season, Aston Villa aims to progress deep into the Europa League and fiercely compete for a top-four spot in the Premier League, thereby securing a place in next season's Champions League. Currently, Emery's team sits fourth after 31 rounds, one point behind Manchester United.
Sancho joined Aston Villa last summer on loan from Manchester United, making 31 appearances and scoring one goal. Whether the club will retain him after his loan spell ends remains a big question mark.
