Today, the area around Vinh Loc Secondary School is bustling with activity, featuring Cau Do Market, the commune's administrative center, busy roads, and numerous shops and services. Land here is therefore increasingly valuable, and few people want to sell because of the many opportunities for long-term business and living.
Here, there is an elderly farmer who unhesitatingly donated over 6,500 square meters (more than 6.5 acres) of land to build Vinh Loc Secondary School in 2003. That is Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung, known locally as Mr. Bay Trung. Beginning the conversation with the development and prosperity of this Cau Do area, I asked Mr. Bay Trung if he regretted not donating the nearly 7 acres of land, which would have brought him billions of dong. He firmly replied, "No!" He stated unequivocally that if given the choice again, he would still maintain his intention to donate the land to build the school, so that local children could have better learning opportunities and no longer have to travel long distances.
Recalling the past, Mr. Bay Trung recounted that the Cau Do area in Vinh Loc faced many difficulties, with poor transportation and inadequate infrastructure. Getting to school was very challenging for children, with difficult roads leading many to drop out. Understanding the local needs and wanting to create more convenient conditions for students to attend school, Mr. Bay Trung voluntarily donated a plot of land, over 6.5 acres in size and with a 60-meter frontage, to build a new, spacious, and standard-compliant school.
Currently, Vinh Loc Secondary School has 16 classes with 657 students and 34 staff and teachers. The school's facilities are regularly invested in and upgraded, becoming a place to impart knowledge and nurture dreams for many generations of local students. Ms. Truong Thi Thuy Trang, a resident of Cau Do hamlet, shared: “If converted according to current land prices, the value is enormous. Yet Mr. Bay did not hesitate to donate land to build a school for local children to study. That is truly admirable.” Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang, Principal of Vinh Loc Secondary School, said: “Mr. Bay's gesture is extremely noble. Previously, the old school building was cramped and lacked many things. Since the new school was built, the facilities have been improved, parents find it more convenient to drop off and pick up their children, and the number of students has gradually increased year by year.”
Not stopping there, seeing that teachers lacked stable housing, Mr. Bay Trung donated another 200 square meters of land to build staff housing. Thanks to this, many teachers had better conditions to stay at the school and dedicate themselves to their profession. Having spent his entire life in the riverside area, he was also deeply concerned about the issue of children drowning. Therefore, Mr. Bay dedicated a portion of land near the school, spent over 400 million VND to build a swimming pool, and personally taught the children swimming skills and self-defense techniques in the river environment.
At nearly 80 years old, Mr. Bay Trung still retains the enthusiasm of an exemplary veteran. Looking back on his accomplishments, he doesn't see them as achievements to be proud of, but simply as something he felt he had to do for his homeland. The land he donated has nurtured the sweet fruits of knowledge, continuing to foster dreams and talents for his homeland and country. Mr. Nguyen Hoang Chon, Secretary of Cau Do Hamlet, commented: "The local community always recognizes Mr. Bay as a prime example in the movement of donating land for school construction. His contributions have had a significant impact on the development of the locality."
