Cultivating a reading habit for students.

Việt NamViệt Nam02/03/2025

Books are an invaluable "treasure trove of knowledge" for humanity. Reading not only enriches knowledge about science and life but also helps students relax after stressful study hours. Therefore, cultivating a reading habit among students and developing a reading culture in schools is always valued by schools in the province and considered one of the important factors contributing to improving the quality of education .

Cultivating a reading habit for students. Students from Tay Do Secondary School (Vinh Loc) read books in the school library.

Recognizing that fostering a reading habit is a solution to help students acquire better life skills and proactively fill in knowledge gaps, Tay Do Secondary School (Vinh Loc) has consistently focused on cultivating reading habits among its students and developing a reading culture within the school over the years. To achieve this, the school has maximized the role of the school library, creating an open and friendly space where students can read after regular classes. Mr. Trinh Trung Chau, Principal of Tay Do Secondary School, shared: “To spread the love of books and encourage the development of reading culture, the school has mobilized resources to build a spacious library according to national standards with more than 5,600 books and newspapers of various kinds. The school library is open continuously every day of the week so that students and teachers can come to read books and find materials after each regular class. The school's goal is to build a truly open library, where books are not just for display and decoration, but to serve the maximum reading, learning, and research needs of both teachers and students. And more importantly, through the activities of the library and the nurturing of teachers, students will love reading and form a reading habit.”

At Hau Loc Town Secondary School (Hau Loc District), in addition to investing in and maintaining the school library for students and teachers to read, research teaching materials, and borrow books to take home, the school has also built a mobile library in each classroom for students to read during recess, before, or after each class. In particular, the school has recently created many spaces for students to access books, such as organizing competitions like "We Tell Stories Based on Books" and "Reading Day," thereby contributing to fostering a love of books among the students.

Not limited to libraries and bookshelves in classrooms, the idea of creating a highlight in the educational landscape, providing students with a beneficial playground after stressful school hours, and simultaneously developing a reading culture in schools, has led to the establishment of green library models in many schools in the province, such as Xuan Lai Primary School, Xuan Lap Primary School (Tho Xuan); Quang Hai Primary School (Quang Xuong)... Mr. Pham Van Tuan, Principal of Xuan Lai Primary School (Tho Xuan), said: The green library model was built by the school in 2021 with an area of 110m2. To create interest in reading for students, the library is arranged harmoniously, aesthetically pleasing, close to and friendly with nature. Inside, the library is designed simply with bookshelves and cabinets neatly arranged in easily visible locations, convenient for students to read. Currently, the school's green library has nearly 5,000 books, covering various genres such as reference books on academic knowledge, children's comics, jokes, fairy tales, and more.

In reality, developing a reading culture is extremely important for students, helping them form a healthy lifestyle, limiting the use of electronic devices that harm their health and uncontrolled social media that affects their psychological and physical development. Nguyen Minh Duc, a student at Dong Bac Ga Primary, Secondary, and High School ( Thanh Hoa City), shared: “Before, outside of school hours, I often watched TV and used my phone. But since the school launched and encouraged students to go to the library, I started reading books. Regular reading not only helps me improve my reading skills, but also adds to my knowledge of history, society, and life skills.”

It is evident that reading spaces in schools have been creating a healthy environment that helps students cultivate the habit of daily exposure to new knowledge through books, thereby contributing to nurturing their souls and forming good character. Therefore, in addition to investing in building standard libraries with useful books suitable for each age group, many schools also develop a series of experiential activities to spread reading culture to every staff member, teacher, and student. Some schools even choose books as a highlight and a gift for students at the end of each school year. However, many administrators and teachers believe that to develop and form reading habits among students and further enhance reading culture in schools, besides the investment and attention from schools, the cooperation and support from parents and the community are essential. Parents must recognize that reading is the shortest path to accumulating knowledge, from basic to advanced levels, in all fields. Therefore, it's important to invest in, encourage, and motivate your children to read books whenever and wherever possible.
