Coach Advocaat burst into tears. |
The 78-year-old Dutch strategist expressed his emotions upon witnessing Curacao's first-ever World Cup appearance. The Caribbean island nation, with a population of only around 155,000, has written a fairytale story by securing a ticket to the biggest football event on the planet.
By leading Curacao at the 2026 World Cup, Advocaat will become the oldest coach ever to manage a team in the tournament. This will also be his third World Cup appearance, following his stints with the Netherlands in 1994 and South Korea in 2006.
The veteran coach's tears became even more meaningful considering he had almost missed the tournament. In February, Advocaat decided to resign to spend time caring for his daughter, who was experiencing health problems. However, when his daughter's condition improved, he returned to lead the team on May 11th.

Ahead of the clash with Germany, Advocaat asserted that his players were not intimidated by their much stronger opponent. “We are a small country, but we will make things difficult for Germany. Curacao has nothing to lose and is perfectly capable of causing an upset,” he shared.
Nevertheless, the difference in class between the two teams was clearly evident on the field. Germany won 7-1 against Curacao, thus achieving the biggest victory since the start of the 2026 World Cup. However, Curacao still left their mark with their first historic goal at the biggest football event on the planet.
