Despite losing 1-2 in the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium on the morning of April 15th, Atletico still advanced with an aggregate score of 3-2 after two legs. This result makes Simeone the first coach in the club's history to achieve 15 wins in knockout matches in the Champions League, a record far superior to any of his predecessors.
Under the guidance of the Argentinian strategist, the Madrid team has reached the Champions League semi-finals four times in 2014, 2016, 2017, and now 2026.
Speaking after the match, coach Simeone expressed his excitement: “I’ve been here for 14 years and every time I watch the team play, I’m still moved. We’ve changed a lot of players, started over many times, but we’re still in the top four of Europe.”
He also emphasized that beating Barcelona has never been easy: "We've faced Lionel Messi's Barcelona before, and now Lamine Yamal's generation. But we still managed to do it."
In response to criticism that Atletico plays a negative defensive style, the Argentinian strategist countered by asserting that his team is increasingly perfecting its attacking game.
In the Champions League semi-finals, Atletico will face the winner of the match between Arsenal and Sporting CP.
