Are the Do and Dau surnames from the same lineage?

VTC NewsVTC News24/09/2024

According to historical records and old documents preserved in village communal houses and Vietnamese national museums, the Dau surname shares the same origin as the Do surname; due to regional pronunciation differences, various names have emerged over time.

According to the book "The Do Family of Vietnam," this lineage has existed and been associated with the birthplace and settlement of the ancient Vietnamese people for at least 5,000-6,000 years, before the establishment of the first nation with the name Van Lang and even before the establishment of the first Hung King.

The first known person with the surname Do in Vietnamese history was Mrs. Do Ngoan (Princess Doan Trang), often referred to as Do Quy Thi.

The Do (Dau) clan is one of the largest clans in Vietnam, with a long history.

The Do (Dau) clan is one of the largest clans in Vietnam, with a long history.

Legend says that Do Quy Thi was the daughter of Long Do Hai Vuong, who ruled at the mouth of the To Lich River in Nghi Tam, Hanoi . Long Do Hai Vuong was one of the three tutelary deities of Thang Long, Hanoi (also known as the White Horse God), worshipped at Tan Khai Temple on Hang Vai Street, Bach Ma Temple on Hang Buom Street, and many other places in Hanoi.

Ms. Do Quy Thi had eight younger brothers: Do Xuong, Do Tieu, Do Ky, Do Cuong, Do Chuong, Do Dung, Do Bich, and Do Trong.

Her husband was Nguyen Minh Khiet (Emperor De Minh), and they had a son named Loc Tuc. However, not long after, due to disagreements with her husband, she took her son to become a nun at Dong Tien (in Lac Thuy district, Hoa Binh province today).

Đỗ Quý Thị and her eight younger brothers devoted themselves to raising Lộc Tục until he grew up, until King Đế Minh handed over the reins of power, giving him the title Kinh Dương Vương and naming the country Xích Quỷ.

After her death, Ms. Do Quy Thi was worshipped at Van La Pagoda (Van Khe, Ha Dong, Hanoi).

Today, the Do family in Vietnam has developed into a large community, residing in most localities across the country. To date, the book "The Do Family of Vietnam" has compiled and briefly introduced the history of approximately 320 branches of the Do family in villages and communes (including 124 branches in Nghe An, Ha Tinh , Thanh Hoa, Ho Chi Minh City, and many localities in the South, which are sometimes referred to as the Dau family).

According to a history expert from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences , the Do and Dau surnames are considered to be of the same lineage. The Do surname is concentrated in the northern provinces and cities, while the Dau surname appears in the central and southern regions.

"In some localities, the letter 'đ' is often pronounced with a very heavy accent - 'đỗ' becomes 'độ', which over time has become 'đậu'," this person added.
