But during the days when students bid farewell to school for summer vacation, too many disturbing incidents occur. Thai Binh: A preschool student died after being left behind in a school bus (again, left behind!). Quang Binh: The principal and parents clashed right on the podium at the closing ceremony over the purchase of lockers for students. Hai Duong : Controversy erupts over a student sitting and watching the rest of the class eat at a party because their parents didn't pay the class fund? And here and there, uproar over why only outstanding students are invited to the closing ceremony...
All the blame falls on the education sector. The governing body, already overloaded, is increasingly burdened by pressure from all sides. The "main engine" must bear primary responsibility, of course. But families and society must also empathize with and support schools, instead of deliberately seeking out flaws and incidents to publicize, many of which are reported without verifying their accuracy.
Regarding the issue of why only outstanding students are invited to the graduation ceremony (some schools select only the most excellent students) – this topic has been discussed in the press, on social media, and on education forums for many years, not just recently. Specifically, from a legal standpoint, the principle of fairness in education does not allow this (clearly stated in Article 13 of the 2019 Education Law: The State implements social justice in education...); and from an ethical standpoint, such behavior is also not in line with pedagogical standards. However, when directly investigating with many schools (which only invite outstanding students, with some extending to excellent students), the school administration explained: In previous years, the school invited enough students but too few attended, probably because the school year was over and the students were feeling lazy; and because their academic achievements were not as good as their peers, most students who did not receive awards felt discouraged and decided to stay home.
If the school invites all students but they decide whether to attend or not, the organization of the graduation ceremony will be in a reactive position. Therefore, although it's not a big deal, it's very awkward and can easily cause hurt feelings.
"Oh, my dear, those innocent childhood years."
"The flame tree is sad, its eyes red and swollen."
(Summer Farewell - Truong Nam Huong)
I only hope to see the sadness in the children's eyes, purely because they are saying goodbye to their friends, teachers, and school; not because they are "red-eyed" from witnessing the scandals and gossip of everyday life that are inappropriate for their innocent and pure school age!
