Hoài Thanh and Đỗ Quyên took advantage of their time back home to teach advanced cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera) classes to students under artist Thy Nhung.

Hoai Thanh and Do Quyen find teaching tiring but enjoyable.

Thy Nhung won the Silver Bell award for traditional Vietnamese opera in 2014 and was also a student of artists Hoai Thanh and Do Quyen.

Artist Do Quyen said she was very happy to hear that her student had opened a class to train Cai Luong singers. Thy Nhung had invited the teachers to the center to teach the students many times, but each time they returned to Vietnam they could only stay for 1-2 months, so it was inconvenient for them to accept the invitation.

"This time, due to family matters, we're staying a bit longer, about 6-7 months, so we're taking advantage of the time to teach students to ease our longing for the profession," artist Do Quyen confided to Tuoi Tre Online .

In their latest class, the couple guided My Duyen, a contestant who reached the top 9 of the 2025 Golden Bell Vong Co Singing Competition. Hoai Thanh and Do Quyen taught My Duyen every detail, from emphasizing and embellishing words to handling rhythm and singing appropriately during performances.

Artist Do Quyen was formerly a lecturer in the Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) department of the School of Arts and Theatre II (now the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film).

During the time she taught students here, artist Hoài Thanh also helped his wife guide the young people in their semester and graduation exams.

Do Quyen and Hoai Thanh have many talented students like Le Tu, Ha Nhu, Thy Nhung… She shared that she loves teaching. "Now that we are older, teaching is very tiring, but being able to teach students makes us feel very happy," Do Quyen said.

Therefore, after settling abroad, having the time and favorable conditions, they opened a class to teach cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera) to support young people overseas who still love this art form of their nation.

The advantages of being an artist who teaches.

As renowned artists of cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera) and also teachers, Hoài Thanh said that this was an advantage when teaching.

According to him, in school, teachers usually only teach the correct song but not how to sing it. That is, a song is sung in theory, but the performer must also learn how to sing it emotionally, engagingly, and in a way that resonates with the audience.

The experience of seasoned artists helps them impart both theory and practice to their students, making them feel less overwhelmed when approaching the stage and the audience.

"Singing in a salon is very different from singing on stage; it's not always about singing with sharp, staccato movements. To the best of our ability, we want to guide the students on how to handle a song correctly in different situations to preserve the sentimental and lyrical quality of Cai Luong," said Hoai Thanh.

He expressed that teaching is also a way for him and his wife to connect with younger generations, understand their preferences regarding cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera), and then analyze and collaborate on creative approaches for each piece and segment of the performance.

Thy Nhung's class marked the return of Hoai Thanh and Do Quyen to teaching after a hiatus. They felt happy about it.

Between teaching days, they would perform in a few shows, and when they had free time, they would go to see Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) performances. The feeling of being immersed in the artistic atmosphere made them very happy; Cai Luong seemed to have never been interrupted in the journey of the artist couple Hoai Thanh and Do Quyen.
