Learning through postage stamps

The commemorative stamp set celebrating the 50th anniversary of the reunification of the country (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025) is a meaningful product of the Stamp Club of Nui Sap Town Secondary School (Thoai Son District) to celebrate the grand occasion. For nearly 20 years, the passion for stamps and learning history through each stamp has been kept alive by dedicated individuals in Ong Thoai.

The stamp collection and stamp drawing are the result of responding to the 2025 Postal Stamp Collection and Research Competition, directed by the Central Youth Union Council and organized by the Vietnam Children's Support and Development Center in coordination with the Vietnam Post Corporation and the Vietnam Philatelic Association. The competition was launched by the Youth Union of Nui Sap Town Secondary School, attracting over 500 participants. The children collected and drew stamps on the theme "50 Years of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and National Reunification through Postal Stamps." Mr. Trinh Van Thu (Head of the Stamp Club) stated that the activity aims to create a healthy and beneficial playground for children, thereby fostering national pride and deep gratitude towards the generations of ancestors who bravely sacrificed for the independence and unification of the country.

According to the assessment, the quality of the works is quite consistent, reflecting the students' understanding of history with respect and pride, and their investment in researching knowledge to stay on track with the theme. In anticipation of the national holiday, the club has also organized activities themed "Vietnam, the Heroic Nation," exploring the biographies of heroes and meritorious figures through postage stamps, such as General Vo Nguyen Giap, heroine Vo Thi Sau, and heroine Mac Thi Buoi… The students also drew portraits of President Ho Chi Minh with children, compiled their works for display, and held a stamp exhibition to commemorate Hung Vuong's death anniversary and the Thoai Ngoc Hau temple in the local area. Prior to the April 30th stamp set, the club also created a collection about the Vinh Te Canal.

The Stamp Club of Nui Sap Town Secondary School was established in 2006, meeting every Saturday afternoon. Mr. Thu is a dedicated teacher who passionately imparts knowledge about history and is also a stamp collector member of the An Giang Provincial Stamp Association. Over the years, the club has maintained its regular activities and quality thanks to the advice of Mr. Tran Huu Hue, known as the "king of stamps" in the Mekong Delta. In addition, it benefits from the support of the Nui Sap Town Secondary School's Board of Directors, the agreement of parents, and the students' love and passion for stamp collecting.

Nguyen Hoai Anh (class 7A4) said that before joining the club, she "borrowed" the hobby of stamp collecting from her two older brothers. Besides collecting on her own, the familiar place they often go to exchange stamps is Mr. Tran Huu Hue's house to receive or buy them. "Collecting stamps helps me develop neatness, patience, broaden my social circle, interact with many friends, and expand my knowledge, especially historical knowledge," Hoai Anh shared. Also participating in this hobby, Truong Gia Han (class 7A1) always finds special joy in each club meeting.

The activity followed this sequence: Mr. Hue and Mr. Thu introduced knowledge about stamps and the significance of historical dates, followed by a quiz with questions. Each correct answer was rewarded with a stamp – a prize everyone eagerly awaited. In this way, even when tackling challenging topics like April 30th or historical leaders, students could still find the stamp they wanted by participating regularly in the activity.

Stamp club meeting

The students maintain their passion alongside their studies. The joy of collecting stamps motivates them to love going to school and to love history. To date, each student has their own stamp collection, with varying numbers, from a few dozen to hundreds. In addition to participating in stamp-hunting activities at the club, students also collect stamps from old envelopes given to them by relatives and grandparents.

Initially, the students collected stamps according to their means and abilities. When the number was large enough, they began choosing themes, or compiling collections about animals, nature, landscapes, insects, President Ho Chi Minh, etc. The stamp club at Nui Sap Secondary School maintains a platform where stamps bearing the imprint of history and the times are preserved by two dedicated "senior members," with the younger students as the future successors. Many students have transferred schools or entered the workforce, yet they still maintain this wholesome hobby.
