Indonesia plans to build a light rail transit (LRT) system on the popular resort island of Bali next year to alleviate road congestion from the airport.
Bali attracts millions of foreign tourists every year. However, the narrow roads scattered across the island have been severely congested since reopening after the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to CNA, Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Coordination Luhut Pandjaitan, the LRT will be built underground, connecting the island's international airport with the popular tourist areas of Canggu and Seminyak. The airport is expected to handle 24 million passengers annually by 2025-2026.
The project, spearheaded by President Joko Widodo, has attracted investment interest from Seoul, Tokyo, and Beijing.
