Messi and Inter Miami are currently preparing for the new season. This includes playing friendly matches to assess their squad and tactics.

However, one of these training matches had to be canceled, much to the disappointment of the fans. Inter Miami was originally scheduled to play a friendly match in Puerto Rico against Independiente del Valle on February 14th.

Just days before the match, the reigning American champions unexpectedly canceled it. Instead, the contest between the two teams may be postponed to February 26th, although no official decision has been made yet.

And the reason Inter Miami had to change their plans is related to Messi. The Argentinian star suffered a hamstring injury after a friendly match against Barcelona SC in Ecuador a few days ago.

Since then, Messi hasn't trained a single day with Inter Miami. He even risks missing some of the early season games in Major League Soccer (MLS) at the end of February.

Normally, clubs wouldn't cancel a friendly match just because a player is injured. Inter Miami made an exception this time, showing just how much they value Messi.

As for the Argentinian star, he apologized to fans in Puerto Rico after the friendly match had to be canceled.

Messi said: "I would like to send my greetings to the fans in Puerto Rico, who were supposed to be in the stadium to watch us train and play. In the previous match, I was injured and had to leave the field early. Therefore, the club and the organizers decided to cancel this friendly match. Hopefully, everything will be adjusted so that I can meet everyone."

Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. Since then, he has helped transform the club. From consistently finishing at the bottom of the MLS table, Inter Miami gradually improved their performance. Their peak was in 2025, when they won the championship thanks in large part to Messi's contributions.
