Gurman also reported a few days ago that Apple had paused development on its new operating systems, including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11, for a week. The pause was done to help the company focus on fixing software bugs in the system, which has been a major step for Apple in the past few years. Internally, Apple's senior leadership has described its upcoming operating system as "ambitious and exciting" with new features and redesigns, along with performance and security improvements.
Apple hasn't drastically updated its operating system since iOS 7, but iOS has seen some major improvements in recent years. With iOS 14, Apple introduced widgets to the iPhone's home screen for the first time, and in iOS 16, the company brought major improvements to the lock screen for more customization.
Next year, analysts say artificial intelligence (AI) will be a key feature of iOS 18, especially in Siri. The iPhone's virtual assistant could improve significantly in the next generation of software. The company is also working to catch up with Google and OpenAI in the field of general AI, with iOS 18 bringing general AI capabilities to the iPhone.
Gurman added that since the iPhone 16 doesn’t change much from the iPhone 15, one of the reasons to buy the new models will be software-based. So iOS 18 will convince more people to upgrade from their older iPhones to get exclusive features only available on the iPhone 16. That’s important for Apple, as the iPhone 16 isn’t expected to feature any major hardware advancements next year.
Finally, Apple is still in the early stages of iOS 18 development, which is internally known as M1. Each stage takes about six weeks and should be completed four weeks before Apple introduces the new software at its developer conference - WWDC 2024 (in June).
