In research sent to clients, Jeff Pu stated that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon X75 modem. He believes the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will retain the Snapdragon X70 modem, the same as the iPhone 15 series.
Typically, Apple uses the same Qualcomm modem for all iPhones released in the same year, except for the iPhone SE. So this could be a change in Apple's strategy.
Launched in February 2023, the Snapdragon X75 is an improvement over the X70, offering faster 5G download and upload speeds. The combined mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G transceiver occupies less than 25% of the circuit board space and uses 20% less power, according to The Verge.
Additionally, the Snapdragon X75 supports the latest 5G Advanced standard, described as the “next stage of 5G” and the “evolution towards 6G”. 5G Advanced relies on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to improve performance over 5G, expanding the types of devices and use cases for 5G.
Apple is likely to market the iPhone 16 Pro as 5G Advanced, similar to how the iPhone 6s supported LTE Advanced in 2015.
Apple has been rumored to be researching its own 5G modem since 2018, but the project has faced numerous challenges and is not expected to be completed until 2025 or later. Therefore, in the meantime, the iPhone manufacturer has extended its 5G agreement with Qualcomm until 2026.
