On September 19, the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air series officially hit shelves in several countries around the world . At the store, many people discovered that some models were scratched even though they had only been on display for a short time.

According to Bloomberg , the dark blue versions of the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max were scratched after a few hours of display. The stores observed by reporters included Apple Stores in New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai and London.

The reporter also noticed that the black iPhone Air scratches easily. Apple's MagSafe magnetic charging dock also leaves visible marks on the back of the product.

This is the first time Apple has redesigned the back of the iPhone Pro in many years. On the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, Apple used a monolithic aluminum shell, claiming better scratch resistance. Currently, the company has not commented on the incident.

Users in China, one of the first markets to launch the iPhone 2025, quickly shared a series of photos of scratches on the back of the iPhone 17.

As of the afternoon of September 19, the related hashtag was on the trending topic list on Weibo with over 40 million views. On social network X , a series of accounts also shared images of scratched phones.

According to Bloomberg , aluminum is a material that scratches easily, which can be seen clearly on dark colors. In 2012, the iPhone 5 had a similar problem, with users reporting visible scratches on the black and gray versions.

Apple launched the iPhone 17 Pro in orange, silver and dark blue, with dark blue being the darkest color. This generation no longer has the black option, which is the main color in the basic color list of iPhones.

This isn’t the first time the iPhone has been criticized on its first day on the shelves. In 2016, the iPhone 7 was quickly criticized for its glossy black back that scratched easily.

The iPhone 6 has more serious problems with its thin design causing it to bend easily. The iPhone 4 also has antenna problems and unstable signals when held in certain positions.

The iPhone 17 is an important product line for Apple. The company hopes this generation will help maintain growth momentum in the context of difficult AI race.

According to records, pre-order demand for the iPhone 17 series in Asia is quite strong, especially for the iPhone 17 Pro.

In Hong Kong, a small group of users came to Apple stores to experience the new iPhone, while the delivery line was only for the iPhone Air. If choosing the iPhone 17 or 17 Pro, buyers were instructed to order online and wait about 3 weeks to receive the device.

Apple stores in Australia, New Zealand, mainland China, and Singapore also offer similar delivery times, with iPhone 17 Pro Max buyers facing a four-week wait. In South Korea, iPhone 17 Pro buyers are expected to receive theirs within a week, with the Pro Max model set to be delayed until the end of October.

Hundreds of people received iPhone 17 on the walking street. Nearly 600 customers lined up from the night before to wait to buy iPhone 17 early. The tradition of lining up to buy Apple products is recreated in Vietnam.
