Immediately after the new iPhone lineup officially went on sale last Friday, reports of scratches began to surface and quickly spread.

According to our investigation, the scratches were mainly observed on the dark blue versions of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, as well as on the Space Black version of the iPhone 17 Air.

This issue isn't limited to individual consumers' products. According to Bloomberg, these defects have also been found on display phones at Apple Stores in Hong Kong, Shanghai (China), New York, and London.

Notably, Apple's MagSafe charger also appears to leave a distinct circular mark on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro and Air models.

A wave from the community

The online community quickly reacted. In China, where the iPhone 17 went on sale early, users posted numerous images of scratched phones on the social media platform Weibo.

Hashtags related to this issue have become one of the most trending topics, attracting over 40 million views. Similarly, images of scratches have flooded social media platforms like X and Facebook.

Tech YouTubers have also joined the discussion. In one video , the popular channel JerryRigEverything conducted a durability test, showing that some areas of the iPhone 17 Pro are significantly more prone to scratches.

While the camera lens is well protected by Gorilla Glass, the metal bezel surrounding the camera module is prone to scratches and even chipping. The back of the device can also be scratched, although some minor scratches can be wiped away.

To verify this, a journalist from CultofMac went directly to an Apple store and confirmed finding deep scratches on some display devices, scratches that could not be wiped clean with a microfiber cloth.

The cause lies in the materials.

Why is the iPhone 17 more prone to scratches than previous generations? The answer may lie in the change in frame material.

With the iPhone 15 and 16 Pro series, Apple used titanium – a durable material but with drawbacks in terms of heat dissipation.

To address this, Apple is said to have reverted to using an aluminum frame for the iPhone 17 Pro models. Aluminum dissipates heat better but is softer and much more prone to scratches than titanium.

For the back, Apple has equipped both sides with Ceramic Shield glass. Although Ceramic Shield is highly scratch-resistant, scratches can still appear and become particularly noticeable on darker versions.

Protection solutions

Given this situation, the best advice for iPhone 17 owners is to get protective accessories immediately.

Using a phone case and screen protector is the most effective way to protect your phone from scratches, bumps, and potential damage.

A transparent phone case could be an ideal choice, as it protects the back and edges without obscuring the phone's original color.
