Shortly after the new iPhone line officially hit shelves last Friday, reports of scratches began to appear and quickly spread.

According to the reporter's investigation, the scratches were mainly recorded on the dark blue version of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, as well as on the Space Black version of the iPhone 17 Air.

The problem isn’t limited to consumer devices. According to Bloomberg, the bugs have also been found on phones on display at Apple Stores in Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, and London.

Notably, Apple's MagSafe charger also appears to leave a distinct circular mark on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro and Air models.

Wave from the community

The online community was quick to respond. In China, where the iPhone 17 was released early, users posted a series of images of scratched phones on the social network Weibo.

The hashtag related to this issue has become one of the top trending topics, attracting more than 40 million views. Similarly, images of scratches have also flooded social media platforms X and Facebook.

Tech YouTubers have also joined in. In a video , the popular channel JerryRigEverything conducted a durability test, showing that some areas on the iPhone 17 Pro are much more susceptible to scratches.

While the camera lens is well protected by Gorilla Glass, the metal rim around the camera cluster is prone to scratches and even chips. The back of the device can also be scratched, although some light scratches can be wiped off.

To verify, a journalist from CultofMac went directly to an Apple store and confirmed finding deep scratches on some of the display devices, which could not be cleaned with a microfiber cloth.

The reason lies in the material.

Why is the iPhone 17 more prone to scratches than previous generations? The answer may lie in the change in the frame material.

With the iPhone 15 and 16 Pro lines, Apple used titanium - a durable material but has a disadvantage in heat dissipation.

To fix this, Apple is said to have returned to using aluminum frames for the iPhone 17 Pro models. Aluminum dissipates heat better but is softer and much more susceptible to scratches than titanium.

For the back, Apple has used Ceramic Shield glass on both sides. While Ceramic Shield is scratch-resistant, scratches can still appear and are especially noticeable on the darker versions.

Protection solutions

Given this situation, the best advice for iPhone 17 owners is to get protective accessories immediately.

Using a case and screen protector is the most effective way to protect your phone from scratches, bumps, and potential damage.

A transparent case can be the ideal choice, helping to protect the back and edges without hiding the original color of the device.
