Some iPhone 17 Pro Max users have reported that their "cosmic orange" phone is gradually turning into a rose gold tone after some time of use. This phenomenon was first shared on Reddit and quickly attracted significant attention within the Apple user community.
According to reports, the metal frame of the device has shown a noticeable color change, while the back panel retains its original bright orange color. Many believe the color change may be related to the material used to manufacture the frame, which is anodized aluminum.
Many users believe this is a consequence of oxidation, a natural reaction when aluminum is exposed to air. Typically, Apple uses a thick, uniform anodized coating to prevent this, helping to maintain color durability over time. However, with some devices from specific production batches, the coating may not have been applied evenly, causing parts of the frame to react and discolor.
Images shared online show color shifts concentrated in the corners or edges of the device, areas that are typically subjected to the most friction and exposure to the external environment. The color gradually transitions from bright orange to yellowish-pink, creating a distinct difference from the original design.
Although this change doesn't affect the device's performance, many users are still concerned about its aesthetics. Some argue that the rose gold color gives it a unique "classic" look, but most wish the product had retained its original color of choice.
Apple has not yet issued any official response to the issue. However, according to tech experts, the company may be collecting data and monitoring user feedback to determine the extent of the impact before drawing any conclusions.
Some users recommend that if discoloration is detected, owners should inspect the device in natural light, avoiding the use of alcohol-based cleaning solutions or abrasive materials as these can accelerate oxidation. Afterward, users should contact Apple support, providing photographic evidence and requesting an assessment. If the defect is confirmed to be a product issue, users may be eligible for warranty support.
Since its launch, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has encountered some minor issues related to design and software. Previously, the community reported scratches around the camera module, a phenomenon jokingly referred to as "scratching." Some display devices at Apple Stores also showed signs of material changes in the MagSafe magnetic ring, forcing Apple to address the issue by adding a protective silicone layer.
