Will the iPhone have a 200 MP camera?

Apple is reportedly testing a 200MP camera lens with a large sensor size, which could be featured in an iPhone as early as next year.

On the social media platform Weibo , the account of leaker Digital Chat Station stated that Apple is testing a 200MP telephoto sensor, which could be included in an iPhone as early as next year.

The article, citing supply chain sources, states that Apple is evaluating the possibility of equipping its devices with a 200MP telephoto sensor with a 1/1.12-inch size. According to MacRumors , this solution is similar to Oppo's upcoming Find X9 Ultra.

On the Find X9 Pro, Oppo equipped it with a telephoto lens boasting a 200 MP resolution and a 1/1.56-inch sensor size. This is significantly larger than typical zoom cameras found on smartphones today.

Previously, Digital Chat Station predicted that the Find X9 Ultra version, expected to launch globally in April, would increase the telephoto sensor size to 1/1.28 inch.

Back in January, this leaker also stated that Apple was considering equipping its devices with a 200MP camera, although it hadn't yet been implemented in a technical prototype. At that time, Apple was reportedly still focusing on upgrading its existing 48MP systems.

Also in January, investment bank Morgan Stanley reported that Apple is working to integrate a 200 MP camera into the iPhone as early as 2028.

Samsung first equipped the Galaxy S23 Ultra in 2023 with a 200MP rear camera, and subsequent models also featured this capability.

With a 200MP resolution, the iPhone camera promises to capture photos with more detail. The high resolution also facilitates cropping and printing large-sized photos without significantly reducing quality.

However, 9to5Mac notes that integrating high resolution into smartphone image sensors increases pixel density. This means images will have more noise, especially when shooting in low light conditions.

That's why Apple hasn't chased camera resolution for years. If they wanted to increase lens resolution, they would have to increase sensor size.

Apple is expected to launch the standard iPhone 18 in early 2027 in a two-phase cycle, followed by the iPhone 19 Pro in September of the same year.

2027 also marks the 20th anniversary of the first iPhone launch. Based on rumors, Apple is expected to unveil a special model with a new design and many groundbreaking details similar to the iPhone X from 2017.
