Iran is putting Trump to the test of trust.

Mohsen Rezaei, a military adviser to Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, has just stated that any potential agreement between Tehran and Washington depends on the Trump administration releasing $24 billion worth of frozen Iranian assets.

“If he (Trump) wants to reach an agreement with Iran , then this $24 billion is a test of the trust Iran wants from Trump. It’s a test the U.S. must overcome to pave the way for an agreement. The ball is in Trump’s court,” Rezaei said in an exclusive interview with CNN on June 6.

Iran's demands are putting President Trump in a difficult position. For years, Trump has consistently criticized the administration of former President Barack Obama for transferring $1.7 billion to Iran as part of the 2015 nuclear deal, and has also attacked the administration of former President Joe Biden for allowing Iran access to approximately $6 billion in frozen assets under the 2023 prisoner exchange agreement.

Analysts believe that if Trump approves advance payments to Iran, he could face criticism that he is repeating policies he previously condemned sharply. Meanwhile, Iran considers the release of frozen assets particularly important for its economy, which is already under heavy pressure from sanctions.
