Iran's IRNA news agency reported on January 27 that the navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched Ghaem and Almas AI missiles during recent exercises in the Persian Gulf. The missiles, launched from Mohajer-6 and Ababil-5 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), destroyed simulated targets during the exercises.

Iranian warships launch missiles during exercises in the Gulf and southern part of the country. The images were released on January 24.

The Ghaem and Almas missiles are precision-guided missiles developed by Iran's Ministry of Defense . The IRGC has not specified the AI capabilities of these missiles.

The IRGC conducted a series of military exercises in the Bushehr and Khuzestan provinces in the southwest of the country and the Gulf region on January 24, according to AFP.

These two provinces have major oil facilities. Bushehr is also home to Iran's nuclear power plant. IRGC naval commander Alireza Tangsiri said the exercises simulated the defense of facilities located in such sensitive areas. Tangsiri said Iran is producing cruise missiles with a range of over 1,000 km using AI technology.

The deployment of these missiles comes months after Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called on the country to master artificial intelligence.

The United States was once Iran's main ally and arms supplier. However, since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran has severed ties with the US and developed many advanced missiles and UAVs.

The AI missile drills took place just days after Donald Trump was re-elected as US president. In his first term, the leader withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions as part of a plan to exert maximum pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Last week, Trump said he hoped he wouldn't have to attack Iranian nuclear facilities and called for a deal with Tehran.
