Johnson & Johnson sues Cigna intermediaries

According to The Wall Street Journal on December 13, Johnson & Johnson Corporation (USA) sued units of Cigna Health Insurance Company.

The lawsuit alleges they worked with a drug subsidy intermediary to siphon off Johnson & Johnson's financial assistance for patients taking some of the company's expensive drugs.

“Patient advocacy is for patients, not middlemen,” a Johnson & Johnson spokesperson said. “This lawsuit aims to end these harmful practices and protect patients’ access to medicines.”

The lawsuit comes as Johnson & Johnson and other drugmakers try to scale back programs that pay for drugs or provide free drugs to patients who meet income criteria, arguing that middlemen are exploiting the programs and not getting products to patients who really need them.
