At approximately 2 PM ( Hanoi time) on December 31st, MTV's television channels officially ceased broadcasting globally. Before ending, these channels aired their final program, "Goodbye From MTV," before switching to a screensaver with an logo and text message.
Thus, after 44 years of operation, the 24-hour music channel system within the aforementioned ecosystem has been terminated. This product had a profound influence on many generations of users in popular culture. In reality, the MTV brand hasn't completely disappeared. But the version of the television channel that truly broadcast music continuously day and night has officially ended.
This move directly impacted the group including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. Some other versions of MTV remained in certain countries. However, they lost their core focus on full-time music broadcasting. These broadcasters shifted towards more diverse content, including movies and entertainment programs.
MTV launched in the US in 1981, changing the way young fans enjoyed music. The television channel became a driving force behind the development of accompanying videos , which are now known as music videos.
According to Collier , in the 80s and 90s, MTV's VJs were true television stars. Mark Goodman, Nina Blackwood, JJ Jackson, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn not only presented videos but also chatted with viewers. Later, Kurt Loder delivered music news with a distinct personal style.
According to The Guardian , the decision is part of Paramount's restructuring and cost-cutting plan, expected to save the company around $500 million . Previously, the studio closed Paramount Television Studios, the unit behind films like Jack Ryan and The Spiderwick Chronicles.
In Vietnam, MTV stopped broadcasting on pay-TV systems in 2023.
