Mercosur is a South American common market comprising Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The organization recently signed a free trade agreement with the EU and is now focusing its attention on the Indo -Pacific region, primarily targeting partners such as China, South Korea, India, Vietnam, and the UAE.
Recently, Japan has also strengthened economic and trade ties with distant partners. In terms of economic and trade cooperation, Mercosur and Japan currently have favorable conditions to become ideal partners for each other.

Negotiations between Mercosur and Japan on a comprehensive partnership agreement will likely take several years, but the two sides are now working together. Within the framework of this relationship, both sides place particular emphasis on tariff reductions. Japan needs low tariffs on automobiles and spare parts from Mercosur, as well as assurances of a stable and long-term energy supply. For Mercosur, a top priority is exporting agricultural products to Japan.
Both sides expect that such economic and trade connections will be able to more effectively counter protectionism in general and the trade war with the US in particular. The economic and trade connection between Mercosur and Japan provides new evidence that globalization and free trade are still progressing, and Mercosur gains a new favorable premise to promote connections with other partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
