Remembering a time of war and fire

Over 150 veteran officials, former soldiers, and those who have a deep connection to the Que Phuoc area recently returned to attend a traditional gathering to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the liberation of Nong Son - Trung Phuoc (July 18, 1974 - July 18, 2025).

This was the first reunion since Que Phuoc commune officially came into operation after being established by merging three old communes. This return brought back memories of a fiery period of resistance in this heroic homeland.

Unforgettable memories

Now in its fifth year since 1999, this reunion provided an opportunity for generations of revolutionary cadres to reminisce about their glorious traditions, commemorate fallen comrades, and share their aspirations with the present generation. Sincere stories, tearful eyes, and warm handshakes made the gathering a deeply moving one. Each person was a living witness to a time of war and sacrifice, contributing to the glorious history of the nation.

Mr. Do Tan Hung (82 years old, Deputy Secretary of the Que Son District Youth Union in 1968) emotionally recounted the years he was assigned to work in the western communes of Que Son - a base area of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam.

The Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee at that time had a policy of recruiting cadres to prepare for the momentous occasion - the signing of the Paris Agreement in 1973.

During the process of building the revolutionary base, he, along with comrades Tran Minh Phi, Party Branch Secretary; Ho Minh Duc, and Nguyen Quoc Dung - guerrillas of Que Phuoc commune (formerly), planted the flag of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam at Dong An village communal house, marking the moment of restoring peace to the nation.

"Returning to the old battlefield and meeting the people of Que Phuoc again is a great emotional experience. Today, we meet to remember and remind ourselves that we once fought fiercely for our country," Mr. Hung said, his voice choked with emotion.

Ms. Au Thi Kim Tuyen (78 years old, former member of the Standing Committee of the Que Son District Party Committee) shared that she was in charge of Que Phuoc commune during the resistance war years, taking on the nhiệm vụ when she was just over 18 years old. Life was extremely difficult, but thanks to the support and sharing of her comrades, she gradually matured and became steadfast through each task.

Ms. Tuyen was deeply moved to be reunited with those who had shared the harsh days with her, sharing cassava roots and wild vegetables in the war zone. It was the land of Que Phuoc that had nurtured in her the faith and noble revolutionary ideals.

"I hope that today's young generation will continue the tradition, preserve the great unity, and work together to build a more developed homeland, where the people's lives become increasingly prosperous and happy," Ms. Tuyen expressed.

Continuing the revolutionary tradition

Today, Que Phuoc commune is a land rich in revolutionary traditions, having contributed manpower and resources to the cause of national liberation. More than 50 years after liberation, local officials and people continue to uphold the spirit of solidarity, working together to build a transformed and prosperous homeland; the material and spiritual lives of the people are gradually improving.

A traditional gathering to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the liberation of Nong Son - Trung Phuoc (July 18, 1974 - July 18, 2025).

Mr. Vo Than (from Phu Gia village), a revolutionary who joined in 1965 and has worked in the local area for many years, shared: “After more than 51 years of participating in the revolution, being here today is extremely precious. I hope the younger generation will continue to uphold the spirit of solidarity, contributing their intellect and strength to building our homeland. At the same time, each person should support and guide the younger generation to successfully complete their tasks and continue the glorious traditions of their ancestors.”

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Du, Head of the Liaison Committee of Cadres Participating in the Resistance War in Que Phuoc commune, in its early days, the Liaison Committee had more than 400 members, mostly veteran cadres and former soldiers who had directly participated in the two resistance wars against France and the United States.

“The first time we held a traditional reunion was in 1999. Since then, every two years, the Liaison Committee has organized a reunion to pay tribute to our comrades and reminisce about the wartime memories. However, due to objective circumstances, we have only been able to organize it five times to date.”

“For those who lived and fought in the war-torn mountains and forests, each reunion is a rare opportunity to reminisce about the past, remember fallen comrades, and pass on our passion to the present generation. We are living witnesses of history, responsible for recounting historical truth, and passing on the revolutionary spirit and patriotism to the young generation of today and tomorrow,” Mr. Du expressed.

Currently, the liaison committee has only about 180 members, most of whom are elderly, in declining health, and many are no longer able to travel. Therefore, in the future, the committee will organize annual meetings as a way to preserve memories and continue the revolutionary traditions in the heroic homeland of Que Phuoc.
