According to Thanh Nien newspaper , at this time, major roads in Ho Chi Minh City such as Tran Hung Dao, Hai Thuong Lan Ong, Nguyen Tri Phuong (District 5), Pham Hung (District 8), Cach Mang Thang Tam (District 3)... have many mooncake distribution points launching promotional programs such as "buy 1 get 4 free", "buy 1 get 3 free"...
"Thanks to the promotion, customer numbers increased by 50%"
Unlike the sluggish sales a week ago, a mooncake stall on Pham Hung Street (District 8) has suddenly seen a steady stream of customers thanks to a "buy 1 get 4 free" promotion. Ms. M. (19 years old), who works at the stall, admitted that the number of customers has increased by 50% compared to before the promotion.
Since launching the "buy 1 get 4 free" promotion, Ms. M's store has seen an increase in customers.
Accordingly, Ms. M's stall sells various types of mooncakes from famous brands such as Nhu Lan, Kinh Do, Dong Khanh, etc. Prices here range from 140,000 to 280,000 VND per 4 pieces.
"For example, a week ago, each mooncake with mixed fillings and two egg yolks cost 240,000 VND, but now customers can buy four for the same price. Here, the discounts are genuine, not fake, so we have more customers, especially in the evenings," the girl said.
"With such a huge discount, will the shop still make a profit?" the reporter asked. The sales staff replied that, of course, they're still making a profit at the current price, but certainly not as much as a week ago. However, the price reduction has led to a significant increase in customers, allowing them to sell more cakes.
Ms. M. honestly admitted that the store had previously raised prices slightly so that when they offered a "big discount," it would attract customers and still ensure profitability. However, she said that the price reduction at this store was legitimate, not a "fake promotion," so customers still got a good deal when buying at this time.
However, according to the owners of many mooncake stalls, the number of customers this year is not as high as in previous years.
"At this price, the buy-one-get-four-free promotion will be maintained until the end of this year's Mid-Autumn Festival. Of course, the mooncakes we sell still have more than a month left before their expiration date, until the end of October or the beginning of November, not nearing their expiration date," she added.
Meanwhile, at another mooncake stall in District 5, the owner said that for more than a week now, since launching the "buy 1 get 4 free" promotion, there have been more customers, but it is still very quiet compared to previous Mid-Autumn Festival seasons, and the market is sluggish.
According to this person, older customers mainly prefer mooncakes with mung bean, lotus seed, and mixed fillings. Younger customers look for fillings like lotus seed, green tea, shark fin, and roast chicken… At this time, even though it's close to the Mid-Autumn Festival, the sales point has not yet achieved the expected revenue.
"Street vendors like us have to compete with online sellers. Now, there are many online customers, and the economy is sluggish, so business isn't as good as in previous years," this person added.
Beware of promotions!
Stopping at another mooncake stall on Pham Hung Street (District 8), Ms. Quyen (31 years old) said she was attracted by the "buy 1 get 4 free" sign displayed in front. After inquiring about the price, she commented that it was reasonable, a real "bargain" compared to the previous price, so she decided to buy.
Ms. Quyen chose the type of cake she liked.
"I rarely go to bakeries to buy my pastries; I prefer these places because they're convenient. I saw the 'buy one, get four free' offer, so I went in to ask about the price. It turned out the discount was real, so I decided to buy some. I'm buying them to give to acquaintances and family members; I'm not buying a lot," the customer said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Thanh Thao (24 years old, residing in Thu Duc City) said that yesterday, she accidentally passed by a mooncake stall in Binh Thanh District on her way home from work, saw a sign that said "buy 1 get 4 free," and decided to go in and buy some.
"When I asked about the price, I was told each one cost over 200,000 VND, 3-4 times more than other shops I inquired at more than a week earlier. So there was no discount, they just raised the price a bit and sold four pieces. That's why whenever I buy cakes on sale, I always ask carefully about the price and check the expiration date," she said.
Finally, Ms. Thao decided to buy the cakes from another vendor on Dien Bien Phu Street (Binh Thanh District), at a reasonable price, even though they also had a "buy 1 get 4 free" promotion. "I'm buying these just for myself to eat. Before this, I had already ordered many gift sets from large bakeries to give to my colleagues at work."
"For me, promotions like 'buy one, get four free' or 'buy one, get three free' don't really offer much value; the sellers have already calculated everything beforehand. The best part is that you get a reasonable price, a fair deal without being ripped off," she added.
