Aspiration of the mountainous region

Nam Nghep village, Ngoc Chien commune, Son La province, was once a rather remote area where the lives of the people were difficult. However, recently, this rural area is gradually transforming thanks to the efforts of the local government and the ambition and initiative of the ethnic minority youth.

With foresight and dedication, they have gradually realized their shared dream of building their homeland into an attractive tourist destination with a unique homestay business model.

On her first visit to Ngoc Chien commune, like many in the tourist group from Hanoi , Ms. Tran Huong Giang shared: “I was amazed to witness the majestic beauty that nature has bestowed upon this place, and the people are friendly and kind. I visited the church with the old banyan tree in Phay village, the stone church in Luot village, admired the Vietnamese heritage trees and the centuries-old cypress tree in Ta Nau village... The most impressive thing when visiting Nam Nghep village was seeing the majestic mountains and forests, and taking photos next to the nearly 100-year-old hawthorn tree. The trip left me with many impressions of the people and scenery here, and I will definitely return if I have the chance.”

In Nam Nghep this season, the hawthorn (wild apple) flowers are blooming profusely. What impressed us and other tourists was not only the pristine beauty of this characteristic flower of the mountainous region, but also the wooden houses nestled among the forest canopy like staircases to the clouds. Nam Nghep is known on the highland tourism map for its ethnic cultural beauty and the credibility of its modern tourism approach while still preserving its attractive identity, captivating travelers. Khang A Lenh (born in 1989), a H'Mong ethnic minority, who owns a homestay here, shared: “I've been running a homestay since 2021. Currently, the price of a room here ranges from 600,000 VND to 1,200,000 VND per day, with a revenue of about 400 million VND per year. In addition, when groups of guests stay overnight, we often organize cultural activities for them to interact, such as bonfires, traditional dances, playing the mouth organ and leaf flute; introducing local products (apple wine, dried apple tea, honey, brocade items)... for tourists to buy as souvenirs. This is also a way to promote the local products and culture of our homeland…”

Born and raised in Nam Nghep, Thao A Vang (born in 1976), a H'Mong ethnic minority, shares his journey in tourism business aimed at preserving his ethnic group's cultural identity. From 2006 to 2021, as the village head, Thao A Vang understood the challenges and potential of this land and made many contributions to his homeland. Afterward, he decided to venture into the new field of community tourism. In 2023, Thao A Vang boldly invested over 1 billion VND to build and develop a homestay model on an area of approximately 600m2. This decision not only has personal significance but also reflects his aspiration to transform the face of his homeland and bring Nam Nghep closer to domestic and international tourists.

A Vạng's entrepreneurial journey was far from easy. Initially, the Nậm Nghẹp village faced numerous infrastructure challenges, including inconvenient transportation, a lack of electricity, and schools. By 2022, electricity was finally brought to the village, bringing renewed hope to the residents. Despite these initial difficulties, A Vạng persevered in pursuing his goals. He believed in the tourism potential of Nậm Nghẹp, a place with majestic natural landscapes and a unique H'Mông ethnic culture. His homestay opened in 2023. A highlight of his business is its focus on preserving and promoting H'Mông cultural values. He hopes that visitors will not only come to admire the scenery but also have the opportunity to experience the authentic cultural life of the local people. From the spatial arrangement and choice of decorative items to the way he serves guests, everything reflects the distinctive characteristics of H'Mông culture. This not only makes A Vạng's homestay unique but also plays a crucial role in preserving precious cultural heritage…”.

According to Vice Chairman of Ngoc Chien Commune, Lo Van Thoa, the commune currently has 24 homestays and tourist attractions including hot springs, churches, Ta Tao Mountain, and Ta Rong Mountain. The total number of domestic and international tourists visiting Ngoc Chien in 2025 is estimated at approximately 18,000, with an estimated total revenue of about 5 billion VND per year. The locality successfully organized two festivals, the Hawthorn Flower Festival and the New Rice Festival, with over 3,500 participants. The locality has diversified meaningful activities such as: displaying booths to introduce and promote cultural tourism products, safe agricultural products, and typical products of the commune; organizing folk games, ethnic sports , rice cake pounding competitions, pa pao throwing, goat fighting, and ethnic cuisine exchanges; and organizing the Sky Race Hawthorn Mountain climbing competition in 2026...

“In the coming time, the Ngoc Chien commune government will continue to develop plans for tourist spots and areas in the locality; assess and review tourism potential and advantages, and have effective management and exploitation plans while ensuring environmental hygiene. The commune will have plans to overcome difficulties in land planning to develop community tourism; attract potential investors to exploit and develop various types of tourism; and form tourism tours linked to regional connections,” said Vice Chairman of the commune Lo Van Thoa.

The stories of Thào A Vạng and Kháng A Lệnh serve as inspiring evidence of determination to overcome difficulties and a long-term vision contributing to positive change in the Ngọc Chiến community. Hopefully, with the support of the government and the collective efforts of the community, Nậm Nghẹp will continue to develop, becoming an ideal destination for those who love exploring culture and nature.
