Khau Pum strives to overcome difficulties.

During our visit to Khau Pum village in Muong Chien commune in March, we were impressed by the smooth, concrete-paved road leading to the village, the sturdy houses, and the well-equipped school... From a remote, impoverished village, Khau Pum is striving to improve its situation, eradicate poverty, and transform its appearance.

The internal village road in Khau Pum has been paved with concrete and equipped with streetlights.

The Khau Pum village currently has 92 households with 539 people, mainly ethnic Mong people, accounting for 98.33%. Previously, the lives of the people were very difficult, with a poverty rate of over 40%, and income depended solely on rice, corn, and cassava grown on hillside fields, with farming entirely dependent on the weather... With the support of the State and the efforts of the people in the village, Khau Pum is changing day by day. Leading us along the sturdy concrete road, Mr. Giang A Tao, Party Secretary and Village Head, shared: Thanks to the support policies of the Party and State, and the timely mobilization of commune officials in the new rural development movement, the people have overcome the mentality of waiting and relying on others. Especially when constructing the road from the commune center to the village, the villagers unanimously contributed labor, donated land, and trees to expand the road, facilitating travel and the transportation of agricultural products.

In 2025, the people of Khau Pum village actively contributed labor and donated land to pave 1.2 km of internal village roads with concrete. To date, 80% of the main roads and alleys have been concreted; 70% of households have houses that meet standards; 80% of households have access to safe electricity; and 100% of households have access to clean water. A new 300m² village cultural center was built in 2023, meeting the needs of community activities, contributing to improving the spiritual life, and creating a more modern appearance for the village.

As one of the households that donated a large amount of land to expand the road into the village, Mr. Vang A Chu shared: "Seeing that people in other villages have concrete roads leading right to their villages and alleys, making travel clean, convenient, and easy for motorbikes and cars, I also wanted my village to be like that. So when we were asked to, my family voluntarily donated more than 250 square meters of residential and garden land, and contributed labor to complete the road."

Over the years, under the guidance and direction of the commune, the people of Khau Pum village have boldly introduced new crop varieties into production to increase their income. To date, the villagers have intensively cultivated 42 hectares of crops; raised over 500 head of livestock and more than 1,200 poultry of various kinds; and maintained a model of raising carp in rice fields. As a result, the poverty rate in the village has decreased to 17%.

Mr. Ma A Phang, a pioneer in implementing the rice paddy carp farming model, said: This year, the entire area of over 5,000 square meters of his family's rice paddies is being used to raise carp in order to increase family income. Raising carp in rice paddies doesn't require much care; the most important thing is that the water source must be clean; the carp develop completely naturally. It is expected that this spring rice crop will yield more than 3.5 tons of rice and 200 kg of carp, contributing to increased income.

With its advantageous mountainous terrain, especially the Khau Pum peak which reaches 1,823 meters above sea level, along with its pristine natural landscape and the unique culture of the Mong ethnic group, Khau Pum has become an attractive destination for tourists who love mountain climbing and exploring nature in recent years. The beautiful terrain and short, moderately challenging climbing routes make it a popular destination. In 2025, Muong Chien commune invested in an additional 1.5km road from Co Noi village to Khau Pum, facilitating easier access for visitors.

Mr. Dieu Chinh Hai, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Chien commune, said: "Besides developing agricultural production, the local Party committee and government are gradually building a new direction to help the people of Khau Pum village escape poverty sustainably. In the coming time, the commune will continue to work alongside the people, guiding them to develop community tourism, providing services such as renting tents, selling local food, and serving overnight guests on Khau Pum mountain peak, helping them increase their income."

The support of local Party committees and authorities, along with the people's determination to improve their lives, has brought new vitality to the highland village of Khau Pum, making it increasingly prosperous and well-off.
