Those whose lives begin with a struggle for survival.
No one gets to choose where they are born. The children helped by the "Opening the Way to Life" program understand what deprivation and loss truly mean. At an age when they should be in school and living in the loving embrace of their parents, many have to struggle to make a living, bearing burdens far beyond their years.
Two brothers, Bui Van Lanh (14 years old) and Bui Van Kien (12 years old), residing in Tay Yen commune, lost their mother at a young age. Their father remarried, leaving them to be raised by their maternal grandmother. Their grandmother earns a living by collecting scrap metal, but is now elderly and ill, unable to work. Lanh suffers from a congenital heart condition and is weak, so his schooling has been interrupted. Kien takes advantage of his free time outside of school to work odd jobs to earn a little extra money to buy medicine for his grandmother.
Around the same age as Lành and Kiên, Nguyễn Thị Thúy Duy (13 years old), residing in Kiên Lương commune, has become the sole support for her elderly grandparents and two younger siblings. Four years ago, her father left, and her mother remarried. Duy, along with her two younger siblings, Nguyễn Thị Thuý An (12 years old) and Danh Vũ Khang (4 years old), moved with their grandparents to a rented room and worked odd jobs to make a living. Every day at 1 AM, while everyone else was still asleep, Duy would accompany her grandmother to the brick kiln to work. Her grandfather was ill and unable to work, so the family of five depended solely on Duy and her grandmother's earnings. Duy confided, "My biggest dream is to have a house to live in and for my siblings to be able to go to school. That's all."
At 13 years old, Tran Van Chanh, residing in Vinh Thong ward, is only in the third grade. His mother abandoned him when he was just a baby, and his father has been ill for many years without the money for treatment. Chanh's life consists of days spent accompanying his blind aunt around selling lottery tickets. His joy comes from going to school, learning, and playing with his teachers and friends. Outside of school hours, Chanh never forgets his duty of helping his aunt sell lottery tickets, as that is the main source of income for his family.
"Opening the way to life" - leading the way to the future.
How can we help orphans and children in extreme hardship so that they have the opportunity to thrive in life? How can we ensure that every child has the chance to go to school and build a brighter future? With this aspiration in mind, the humanitarian television program "Opening the Way to Life" was created as a bridge connecting compassionate hearts to these children.
According to Le Van Chuyen, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of An Giang Province's Newspaper and Radio-Television, the program targets orphaned and underprivileged children aged 8-16 who are studious, providing assistance in education, vocational training, and future career guidance. These practical actions today will sow the seeds that will sprout into something better tomorrow.
With the spirit of giving is forever, many philanthropists from near and far have joined the program. In the first few episodes, many benefactors came in person to give gifts and encourage the children. Local authorities actively cooperated with the program to come up with many solutions to help the children stabilize their lives and continue attending school. After 3 episodes, the program raised and supported more than 260 million VND. This is the result of the efforts of the organizing committee including: An Giang Provincial Newspaper and Radio - Television, Nhat Advertising Joint Stock Company, the sponsor Hoa Sen Kindergarten system, and many charitable groups and compassionate individuals inside and outside the province.
"Opening the Path to Life" is not just a television program, but a bridge connecting hearts that share a common goal: giving every child the opportunity to change their destiny through their own strength and knowledge. In this journey, each story is a testament to the power of compassion. When a hand is extended, a life is lifted. When a heart is open, hope is rekindled. "Opening the Path to Life" will continue to sow seeds of love and guide the future through the collective efforts of the community and the compassionate hearts of people near and far.
