In recent days, taking advantage of the sunny weather, farmers in the riverside areas of Hai Phong have been urgently harvesting potatoes for the 2025-2026 winter crop. In Van Giang village (Hong Chau commune), the harvesting atmosphere is bustling. Ms. Vu Thi Thanh (from Thien Khanh village) said that her family has more than 7 sao (approximately 0.7 hectares) of potatoes planted on rented land in the riverside area, with a yield of over 9 quintals per sao.
This winter, in Hong Chau commune, more than 10 households in Thien Khanh and Van Giang villages planted potatoes on a total area of over 20 hectares. The potatoes were harvested simultaneously and sold smoothly thanks to a partnership with a business that guaranteed the purchase of the product.
In eastern communes of the city such as Quyet Thang, Tien Lang, and Vinh Bao, farmers have been harvesting potatoes since the 6th day of the first lunar month. Many households are delighted because the yield is higher than in previous years, and the quality of the tubers is uniform. Mr. Nguyen Van Xuan from Ngan Cau village (Tien Lang commune) said that his family harvested nearly 45 quintals of potatoes from 6 sao (approximately 0.6 hectares), earning a profit of about 25 million VND.
According to the Hai Phong Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in the 2025-2026 winter crop season, the city will plant approximately 850 hectares of potatoes, including 12 production-consumption linkage models covering a total area of over 250 hectares. Thanks to favorable weather and the synchronized application of mechanization, yields in the linked areas reached 1.2-1.4 tons/sao (1 sao = 360 square meters), an increase of 50-100 kg/sao compared to traditional methods. With purchase prices of 8,500 VND/kg or higher, farmers earned an average profit of 4-5 million VND/sao/crop.
Encourage and support the expansion of the area.

Contract farming of potatoes with businesses is providing stable income and motivating farmers to expand their cultivated area. However, developing production areas still faces many difficulties.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Vuong, Director of Quyet Tien Agricultural Cooperative (Tien Lang commune), said that farmers utilize the land left over from the rice harvest to grow potatoes, thereby increasing land use efficiency and raising income. However, in some localities, agricultural land is shrinking due to project planning, affecting the ability to expand production.
In some communes with the potential to expand their cultivated area, agricultural cooperatives have been dissolved or are operating at a reduced capacity, lacking the ability to act as a central link between farmers and businesses. In the western region, despite the farmers' diligence and relatively large areas of cultivated land, participating in contract farming requires a shift from small-scale production to concentrated commodity production, while some farmers remain hesitant to change their traditional farming practices.
In light of this situation, many businesses are proactively partnering with farmers. A representative from Golden Agricultural Development Joint Stock Company stated that the company links production along the value chain, providing support with seeds, input materials, technical guidance, and the application of synchronized mechanization from land preparation and cultivation to harvesting, contributing to increased productivity, quality, and reduced production costs.
Local authorities are also actively supporting and encouraging the planning of concentrated production areas, creating favorable conditions for businesses and farmers to sign and implement linkage contracts. They are strengthening their role in monitoring and protecting the rights of people during the cooperation process.
According to city agricultural leaders, the potato production linkage model not only helps increase income but also contributes to transforming production methods towards a commodity-based approach, forming a stable raw material area for processing. The initial success of these models serves as a basis for further expanding the value chain and promoting sustainable agricultural development in the future.
