Germany is the host nation of the EURO 2024 finals and is not participating in the qualifying rounds. Therefore, international friendlies are even more important for coach Hansi Flick in his quest to rebuild the team after the disappointment of the 2022 World Cup.
The German national team must start again by experimenting with different playing styles and assessing the compatibility of both old and new players. The players will have to prove their abilities to coach Hansi Flick so that he believes they are the right fit for his upcoming plans – a new era for the team nicknamed Die Mannschaft heading towards EURO 2024.
Germany is considered the clear favorite against Ukraine.
This isn't Germany's first friendly match of 2023. They just lost 2-3 to Belgium in March. This time, the challenge for coach Hansi Flick's team is less difficult. Ukraine is not considered a strong opponent.
Germany will be missing several stars such as Ilkay Gundogan, Thomas Muller, Niklas Sule, and Karim Adeyemi, but coach Hansi Flick still has plenty of key players in important positions. Regardless of what kind of experimentation the coach makes, the quality of Germany's personnel remains superior to Ukraine's.
Meanwhile, the visiting team will be without star player Oleksandr Zinchenko due to a calf injury. Striker Roman Yaremchuk has also withdrawn from the Ukrainian squad due to personal reasons. Therefore, the Eastern European team will not have its strongest lineup.
Furthermore, coach Ruslan Rotan will not want his players to exert too much effort in this match. Their important goal is the two EURO 2024 qualifying matches that follow. The match against Germany is more of a warm-up than a crucial result against Ukraine.
Considering their past head-to-head record, Germany has the upper hand. In all eight previous encounters between the two teams, Ukraine has yet to win. It would be no surprise if Germany wins at home.
