The family of Ms. Hoang Thi Tuong (sitting on the left), in Lan Dam hamlet (Quang Son commune), has built a new house.

Ms. Hoang Thi Do, from Lan Dam hamlet, gently patted the back of the mother cow she had just received as part of a livestock project. She happily shared, "For so many years, my family only knew how to grow corn on a few acres of rocky mountain land. I never dared to imagine that one day we would be able to raise cows. Now that the government is supporting us, I am determined to take good care of them so that we can have calves soon, develop a herd, and quickly escape poverty," she said, her voice full of determination.

The story of Ms. Hoang Thi Do is one of many vivid examples of the changes taking place in Lan Dam, where 23 Mong ethnic minority households are gradually overcoming difficulties and moving towards a prosperous life.

Over 40 years ago, the first Hmong families migrated from Cao Bang and Lang Son provinces to establish a village in a remote, rocky mountainous area with a lack of water. Back then, most households were poor, their lives mainly dependent on corn and cassava, and even then, they lacked enough food.

Faced with this situation, Quang Son commune proactively mobilized and integrated support funds from the National Target Program for socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas (Program 1719). Many essential infrastructure projects were invested in: the main road of the hamlet was widened from 2m to 3.5m; the centralized water supply system was upgraded, bringing clean water to every household.

Besides infrastructure development, the commune focuses on mobilizing people to develop their livelihoods. Dozens of short-term vocational training courses, job counseling sessions, and support programs for plant and animal breeds have been implemented, attracting a large number of people to participate.

The Social Policy Bank disbursed over 1 billion VND in loans for reforestation and production development; a project supporting breeding cows worth 227 million VND helped 10 households improve their living conditions.

Thanks to government support and the efforts of the people themselves, Lan Dam is gradually transforming. The people are learning to utilize the hilly land and apply advanced farming and livestock techniques to increase productivity and income.

To date, the hamlet has two households that have achieved a relatively good economic status; seven residents have stable jobs at companies in the province; the cultivated area includes 4.5 hectares of corn, 6.5 hectares of forest, and 2.2 hectares of fruit trees such as custard apples and jackfruit...

A memorable milestone was in 2024, when the hamlet completed its 132m2 community center with a total cost of 490 million VND, of which the residents contributed 86 million VND and 65 man-hours of labor.

From here, the Mong Lan Dam people have a common place to gather, hold meetings, exchange arts and culture, and study, contributing to improving their spiritual lives. 91.3% of households achieved the title of "Cultural Family," and for three consecutive years (2022-2024), the hamlet was recognized as a cultural hamlet.

Entering 2025, as part of the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, 11 households will receive a total of 410 million VND in support for repairing or rebuilding their homes.

In his spacious new home, Mr. Duong Van Kien shared: "Previously, seven people in my family lived crammed into a dilapidated temporary house. Now, with the support to build a sturdy house, my family has more motivation to work hard and take care of our children's education."

Now, along the clean concrete road, new houses have been built, laughter echoes from within the homes; the herds of cattle and chickens are growing larger. Lan Dam is no longer a remote hamlet nestled in the mountains, but has become a thriving rural area, clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of major government policies.
