In particular, the Ministry of Education and Training emphasizes the need to effectively organize counseling and guidance for students registering for elective subjects and study topics, ensuring transparency, adherence to procedures, and a balance between subjects to maximize the utilization of the school's teaching staff as guided by the Ministry of Education and Training. It also stresses the importance of assigning separate classes for each elective subject and study topic, and being flexible in class sizes to best meet students' needs and aspirations; ensuring that teacher assignments and timetables are scientifically sound, reasonable, and do not put undue pressure on students or teachers.
In reality, after four years of implementing the new general education program at the high school level, the differentiated teaching, reduction of compulsory subjects, and increase of elective subjects show that the conditions and methods of implementation still have many shortcomings. Many schools choose the easiest approach: designing elective subjects based on the existing classrooms and teaching staff to make it easiest to schedule.
Observations also show that, due to limited facilities and teaching staff, the number of subject combinations in each high school in Hanoi remains limited, mainly divided into two groups: Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Theoretically, there are over 100 subject selection options in high school, but in reality, most schools will create fewer than 10 combinations, mainly 4-6 subject combinations for students to choose from.
Immediately after students were admitted to 10th grade in high schools for the 2025-2026 school year, the mandatory registration for subject combinations caused considerable confusion among parents and students in Hanoi.
According to Ms. Mai Hien from Cau Giay ward, Hanoi, during the enrollment process for her child in 10th grade for the 2025-2026 school year in July, she and her family were unsure whether her child's abilities and interests suited the natural sciences or social sciences combination. When the school and teachers asked about her child's future university aspirations and desired career path, the whole family felt confused. She felt that it's difficult to determine a specific field of study or university for a student as soon as they enter 10th grade. After numerous phone calls with friends, colleagues, and even her child's middle school teachers, Ms. Mai Hien decided to choose the combination of Geography, Economics , and Law. Although she has registered and the new school year is approaching, Ms. Hien and many other parents who have chosen the same subjects for their children are still very concerned and unsure whether their children can stick with this combination throughout their three years of high school. Is it necessary to change the combination midway through the game?
Regarding this issue, experts believe that, with the orientation at the high school level, even with elective courses in the context of teacher and classroom shortages, if schools implement it diligently, they can still help increase students' choice of subjects. However, if schools only arrange classes for organizational purposes, the difficulties and disadvantages will fall on the students.
