It has been raining continuously for days… in her family’s onion field, Mrs. Phan Thi Moi (Tat Vien village, Binh Phuc commune) is busy hoeing and rebuilding the onion beds that were eroded by the rain. Every year, at this time, Mrs. Moi would have harvested the beds of large onion bulbs in the warm, sunny weather.

Mrs. Moi lamented: “It keeps raining, I give up! Poor onion growers like us! The soil is wet, the bulbs don’t grow big, they just lie there. People have offered to buy onions for twenty or thirty thousand dong, but I have eight acres of onions but no small bulbs to sell.”

Around the end of the 11th lunar month to the end of the year, Binh Phuc people enter the season of harvesting shallots. But until now, there are many buyers, but not many sellers...

Growing 3 sao of shallots, from 6am to 11am, still on the shallots, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Huong (Tat Vien village, Binh Phuc commune) looked at the sky: "I just hope the sun will save any tubers. The leaves look so green but the tubers are tiny, damaged by fungus. Compared to previous years, this year the price is more than 30,000 VND/kg but there are no sales. Now that Tet is here, tubers of all sizes, no matter who wants to buy, will be sold out."

[ VIDEO ] - People in Tat Vien village are worried because their pickled onions are small and damaged by the rain:

Binh Phuc commune has 4 villages that specialize in growing shallots at the end of the year to sell for Tet, especially Tat Vien village. Shallots are grown on more than 120 hectares in the commune, sold to traders in Da Nang, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City... This is the main source of income for Binh Phuc farmers during the pre-Tet period. Mr. Phan Ngoc Bon - Vice Chairman of Binh Phuc Commune People's Committee said.

According to Mr. Bon, the impact of the storm, cold air, and prolonged heavy rains have caused many farmers in Binh Phuc commune to fall into a difficult situation. Most of the onions grow slowly, the tubers are small, and the price is high but the harvest is bad. People face many difficulties at the end of the year.

In 2025, the People's Committee of Binh Phuc commune has identified shallots as the main crop. The commune will zone off 20 hectares as the main crop, identify seed sources, invest in cultivation, ensure production organization and rural economic development according to Criterion No. 13 of advanced new rural communes in 2025.
