With the persistent drizzle lasting for days… on her family's shallot field, Mrs. Phan Thi Moi (Tat Vien village, Binh Phuc commune) diligently hoeed and repaired the shallot rows that had been eroded by the rain. In previous years, at this time, Mrs. Moi would have already harvested the large shallot bulbs in the warm, sunny weather.

Mrs. Moi lamented, "With all this rain, we're doomed! Poor us shallot farmers! The soil is wet, the bulbs don't grow, they just sit there. People are offering to buy shallots for twenty or thirty thousand dong, but I have 8 acres of shallots and the bulbs are too small to sell."

With a 3-acre plot of land dedicated to growing shallots, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Huong (Tat Vien village, Binh Phuc commune) stays up in her shallot fields from 6 am until past 11 am, anxiously watching the sky: “I just hope for sunny weather to save as many bulbs as possible. The leaves look green and fresh, but the bulbs are tiny, and some are damaged by fungus. Compared to previous years, the price is over 30,000 VND/kg this year, but there’s none to sell. Now, with Tet approaching, I’ll sell whatever bulbs, big or small, to whoever wants them.”

Binh Phuc commune has four villages, all specializing in growing shallots for sale during the Tet holiday, especially Tat Vien village. Shallots are grown on over 120 hectares in the commune and sold to traders in Da Nang, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, etc. This is the main source of income for farmers in Binh Phuc during the Tet holiday season. Mr. Phan Ngoc Bon - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Phuc commune, said.

According to Mr. Bon, the impact of the storm, cold weather, and prolonged heavy rain has caused many farmers in Binh Phuc commune to face difficulties. Most of the shallots are growing slowly, the bulbs are small, and while prices are high, the harvest is poor. People are facing many difficulties at the end of the year.

In 2025, the People's Committee of Binh Phuc commune has identified shallots as its main crop. The commune will designate an area of 20 hectares for this main crop, identify seed sources, invest in cultivation, and ensure the organization of production and rural economic development in accordance with Criterion No. 13 of the advanced new rural commune program in 2025.
