New technique for transcatheter pulmonary artery valve replacement.

The University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City has recently applied a transcatheter pulmonary artery valve replacement (TAVR) method without open surgery for a 14-year-old patient from Binh Duong province with pulmonary artery stenosis, performing a complete corrective surgery for Tetralogy of Fallot (four congenital heart defects).

Doctors are implementing a new technique to replace pulmonary artery valves in patients.

This is a minimally invasive technique that allows for a faster recovery. After nearly two hours of percutaneous pulmonary artery valve replacement, the child's condition stabilized, and the echocardiogram and electrocardiogram results were good. The child was discharged after three days of monitoring.

According to Professor, Doctor Truong Quang Binh, an expert at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, Tetralogy of Fallot is a congenital heart disease characterized by four structural defects in the heart, accounting for approximately 5%-10% of all congenital heart diseases. Children with Tetralogy of Fallot need timely surgery to avoid cardiovascular complications or death due to acute hypoxic-cardiac attacks. However, even after surgical repair of Tetralogy of Fallot, children may still face post-operative complications and require regular follow-up examinations. Among these, severe pulmonary valve regurgitation after Tetralogy of Fallot surgery can cause dilation of the right heart chambers, leading to tricuspid valve regurgitation, right heart failure, arrhythmias, and an increased risk of sudden death. Transcatheter valve replacement (TARP) helps patients avoid major open-heart surgery to replace the valve, reducing the risks of complications associated with normal open surgery.
