New technique for percutaneous pulmonary valve replacement

Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital has just applied the method of replacing the pulmonary valve through the skin without open surgery for patient TNNT (14 years old, living in Binh Duong province, with pulmonary valve stenosis), completely surgically correcting Tetralogy of Fallot (four congenital heart defects).

Doctors deploy new technique to replace pulmonary valve for patient

This is a minimally invasive technique that helps patients recover quickly. After nearly 2 hours of percutaneous pulmonary valve replacement, the patient's health was stable, with good echocardiography and electrocardiogram results. The patient was discharged after 3 days of monitoring.

According to Professor, Doctor, Doctor Truong Quang Binh, an expert at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, Tetralogy of Fallot is a congenital heart disease characterized by four structural lesions in the heart, accounting for about 5% -10% of all congenital heart diseases in general. Children need timely surgery to avoid cardiovascular complications or death due to acute hypoxic heart attack. However, even after surgery to correct Tetralogy of Fallot, children can still face post-operative developments and need to be re-examined and monitored regularly. In particular, severe pulmonary valve regurgitation after Tetralogy of Fallot surgery causes right heart chamber dilation, leading to tricuspid valve regurgitation, right heart failure, arrhythmia, and increased risk of sudden death. Percutaneous valve replacement intervention technique helps patients avoid major heart surgery (open surgery) to replace the heart valve, reducing the risk of complications from normal open surgery.
