Back in September 2025, Paul Scholes publicly criticized Manchester United's decision to sign Senne Lammens. "You buy the kid from Belgium. How much? 20 million euros? I think that figure alone says it all about him at this point. It shows me Lammens isn't a top goalkeeper," the MU legend stated.
The former midfielder also urged Manchester United to immediately head to Paris to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was reportedly preparing to leave PSG after winning the Champions League.
A few months later, the events at Old Trafford were a completely different story. Lammens is now among the nominees for the Premier League's save of the month for January.
In his first 18 starts for MU, Lammens only lost 2 games. It's worth noting that Andre Onana lost 8 games in the same period. The difference lies not only in the results, but also in the sense of security that MU's defense provided.
Lammens isn't the flashy type of goalkeeper. He positions himself neatly, makes decisive decisions, and controls the penalty area reliably. When MU is under pressure, the goal no longer causes fans as much worry as before. Many MU fans believe it's been a long time since David De Gea left that the "Red Devils" have had a goalkeeper who provides such reassurance.

Lammens himself admitted that the pressure at Old Trafford was much greater than at his previous club. "At Manchester United, even when I went out to eat, people would ask to take pictures with me; I met about 500 people like that every week. It made you want to give your all for this club," the Belgian goalkeeper shared.
While Lammens is enjoying a successful period with MU, Paul Scholes' statement at the beginning of the season is being overshadowed by reality. Judging a goalkeeper solely by their transfer fee shows a biased perspective rather than a professional one.
With Donnarumma proving unsuitable for MU and Lammens delivering clear results, Scholes' criticism inadvertently backfired. On the pitch, Lammens didn't need to argue. He let the victories and the calm atmosphere at Old Trafford speak for themselves.
