Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Manchester United are actively pursuing plans to sign Tonali in the summer 2026 transfer window. Besides MU, the Italian midfielder is also being targeted by Manchester City.
However, the Etihad Stadium team is reportedly prioritizing another option: Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest. This inadvertently opens up a more favorable opportunity for MU in the race to sign Tonali.
As for Tonali, his future at Newcastle is uncertain. The 25-year-old is expected to leave St James' Park at the end of the season. Tonali is considering a return to his homeland, but attractive offers from Premier League clubs could make him change his mind.
Manchester United see Tonali as an upgrade to their midfield, as the team needs a midfielder capable of controlling the tempo and providing defensive support. The departure of Casemiro and possibly Manuel Ugarte has forced the Red Devils to strengthen their squad before the 2026/27 season. With his experience at the highest level, Tonali is expected to bring the necessary balance.
Conversely, Newcastle are taking a firm stance. The Tyneside club are aware of the interest from big clubs but do not want to let Tonali leave. The Italian midfielder is a crucial link in manager Eddie Howe's system, especially given captain Bruno Guimaraes' frequent fitness issues.
