Phuket Island has always had its own way of celebrating the Thai Lunar New Year. This year, the 11th annual water festival was held on a grander and more elaborate scale than ever before, with the theme "Sanuk sanaan, Songkran baan chan" (Happy Songkran, my homeland), according to Nation Thailand .

The festival takes place from April 11-13 with a series of highlights along the famous Patong and Mai Khao coastlines, from 3 PM to 9 PM each day.

The water festival in Phuket has long stood out from other Songkran celebrations in Thailand. This is not only due to the scale of the water battles, but also because of the unique blend of beaches and Chinese-Portuguese heritage along with deep Buddhist traditions, creating a distinctive atmosphere for the New Year on the island.

In Phuket, the lively beach battles at Patong attract adventurous young people, while the quieter areas at Kata and Karon beaches are for families and older visitors to participate safely.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), total tourism revenue during the period of April 11-15 is expected to reach over 30 billion baht, a 6% increase compared to the same period last year, with an estimated 500,000 international visitors. These figures show that Thailand is heavily investing in this festival as a product to spread its cultural heritage.

The Phuket Water Festival also aims for this goal with a program of 10 lucky activities built around temple rituals and cultural performances. The event focuses on community storytelling, local products, and performances rather than commercial elements.

On the morning of April 13th at Mai Khao beach, tourists were invited to participate in traditional merit-making rituals, bathing Buddha statues and splashing water on revered elders. These rituals all adhere to the core meaning of Songkran.

At Patong Beach in the evening, the atmosphere transforms with Thai-Chinese cultural performances, contemporary music from local schools, community stalls, and locally produced food and drinks, creating a vibrant, festive atmosphere increasingly rare in the age of large, ticketed events.

On April 13th, the beach cleanup activity at Mai Khao added another meaningful highlight to the festival's events.

In Phuket, the most traditional ceremonies and the biggest water fights are concentrated at Mai Khao Beach, Dibuk Road, Bangla (Patong) Road, Phuket Old Town, and Asia Portal.

The Songkran Festival 2026 will take place from April 13-15 in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket (Thailand). This is a traditional New Year celebration, combining spiritual rituals and large-scale water battles. Some localities may extend the festivities until April 16-19. Since 2023, this festival has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.
