Mr. Duong Tan Hien, City Party Committee member and Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, believes that strengthening cooperation between provinces and cities in the region and nationwide is crucial for investing in synchronous and modern infrastructure and facilities, effectively exploiting tourism resources; developing tourism in conjunction with preserving the natural and cultural values of each locality; building unique, professional, branded tourism products that reflect the national cultural identity, and are competitive with countries in the region and the world ; creating a brand and further promoting tourism in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta region…
This statement was made by him at the Tourism Development Linkage Conference held on July 4, 2020, organized by the People's Committee of Can Tho City in coordination with the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, under the chairmanship of the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, Nguyen Thanh Phong, who is also the chairman of the council for tourism development cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta.
In the first six months of 2020, although the tourism industry was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the provinces and cities in the region implemented the contents of the regional agreement; developed action plans to implement the agreement's contents, created regional tourism products, and trained human resources.
During the two (non-pandemic) months of the first six months of the year, five major businesses in the region successfully launched new tour programs, attracting 50,000 tourists from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta. The number of tourists visiting the Mekong Delta during those two months unaffected by the pandemic reached 12.9 million, an increase of approximately 14% (compared to the same two months of the previous year), including 436,890 international visitors to the provinces and cities in the Eastern Mekong Delta region. Coordination efforts also included organizing training courses for 80 business representatives and state management officials from 14 localities on developing local tourism products and managing small hotel and homestay models.
According to Mr. Le Thanh Phong, Vice Chairman of the Mekong Delta Tourism Association, a conference held on July 3rd and 4th, 2020 in Can Tho City, with the participation of leaders from 14 provinces and cities, discussed and agreed on the implementation of several key contents for the last six months of 2020: Developing a common tourism brand identity to promote tourism in Ho Chi Minh City and the 13 provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta; conducting surveys of three tourism routes connecting Ho Chi Minh City and the 13 provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta; and holding a seminar to provide feedback on improving tourism products and services to connect with travel businesses.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, and Chairman of the Regional Council, stated that in the coming period, Ho Chi Minh City will coordinate the organization of a conference to promote and attract tourism investment to Ho Chi Minh City and the 13 provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta and 5 provinces of the Southeast region. This is the general orientation of Ho Chi Minh City's tourism development. The linkage in tourism development between Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta plays a significant role and has importance in developing tourism as a socio-economic lever for these localities, and is especially crucial in the current phase of focusing on domestic tourism development under the new normal conditions.
At the end of 2019, the "Agreement on Tourism Development Cooperation between the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City and the People's Committees of 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta for the period 2020 - 2025" was signed with the goal of strengthening the connection, support, and close coordination of localities and leveraging the strengths and competitive advantages of each locality in building regional tourism products and tourism brands.
