The country also surpassed the US for the first time in its contributions to Earth science and the environment.
The data is extracted from the Nature Index – which tracks scientific articles published in 82 journals in various fields in the field of natural sciences, namely chemistry, earth sciences, environment, life sciences and physical sciences.

Journal Nature China's contributions to the global science industry have continuously increased significantly since the index was launched in 2014. Beijing is also leading the world in physical and chemical sciences from 2021.
Data provided by the world's largest publisher of scientific papers Elsevier also shows that China and the US are the largest bilateral research partners globally. From 2017-2017, each country contributed about 20% of the world's scientific research.
According to Elsevier, China has for the first time overtaken the United States to lead the world in the number of most cited articles - a key indicator of each country's scientific influence.
Report Japan Science and Technology Index According to the report, from 2018-2020, China contributed 27,2% of the most cited articles in the world while the US contributed 24,9%.
