According to leaked images posted on social media platform X on March 30th, Apple is actively testing a smaller Dynamic Island module for the next generation of iPhones.

Specifically, the tech account "Early Apple Leaks" published a close-up screenshot of what is believed to be the iPhone 18 Pro. Under the flashlight beam, viewers can easily see that the pill-shaped notch containing the Face ID facial recognition module has been significantly reduced in size.

In the comments section, rumor expert Majin Bu offered his own analysis of the image, pointing out that the infrared sensor has been moved to the upper left corner of the screen. This refers to a circle that appears to be located beneath the screen in the corner.

This could be a viable way for Apple to miniaturize Dynamic Island, as the emitter would be easier to place beneath the display. Any light-sensing device, such as an infrared sensor or a conventional camera sensor, is much more difficult to place beneath a light-emitting display.

Meanwhile, another well-known source, Ice Universe, posted a different close-up image of the device showing a pair of much smaller notches on the screen.

This isn't the first time information about the smaller Dynamic Island has surfaced. In early January, Instant Digital reported that the iPhone 18 Pro would feature an under-display Face ID illumination system.

In theory, this change helps to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island notch on the product. Other supporting components such as spotlights and infrared cameras remain located within the notch as before. MacRumors quotes veteran analyst Ross Young as agreeing with this rumor.

According to a supply chain report cited by AppleInsider on March 26, Apple has finalized its roadmap to "kill off" the Dynamic Island design. Specifically, Apple is quietly developing technology to embed the entire front-facing camera sensor assembly beneath the display panel.

According to the plan, the Dynamic Island section will be compressed into a small notch. Eventually, this notch will completely disappear, leaving a single punch-hole for the selfie camera.

This roadmap also aligns with supply chain reports and analyst expectations over the years, as Apple strives to eliminate screen notches without compromising Face ID performance.

Additionally, iPhone manufacturers often implement major hardware changes in stages to minimize risks while refining the technology. If this plan holds true, future iPhones will have a more streamlined design while retaining core security features.
