Tuanzebe became a hero of Congo. |
The clash between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Jamaica in the 2026 World Cup intercontinental play-off was a tense, do-or-die match. After more than 120 breathtaking minutes, the African representatives won 1-0, moving closer to their dream of returning to the biggest stage on the planet.
Both teams started cautiously and didn't create many clear-cut chances during regular time. Jamaica controlled the game better at times, but inaccurate finishing prevented them from making a difference.
Conversely, DR Congo played a disciplined game, waiting for opportunities from transitional situations.
The turning point came in extra time. In the 100th minute, Axel Tuanzebe put the ball into the net, but the referee was forced to stop the game to consult VAR.
After a lengthy VAR review, DR Congo's goal was confirmed, giving them the lead. This goal completely changed the course of the match.
Trailing by a goal, Jamaica were forced to push forward. The CONCACAF representatives created constant pressure for the remainder of extra time, but were unable to break through their opponents' tightly organized defense. Efforts from Leon Bailey and crosses from the flanks proved ineffective.
The match also witnessed an unusual incident when referee Facundo Tello suffered an injury and had to leave the field during extra time, causing a disruption to the game.
In the final minutes, DR Congo had a chance to seal the game with a quick counter-attack, but Kayembe's shot went over the crossbar. Nevertheless, the minimal lead was enough for them to secure the victory.
With this result, DR Congo secured their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, something they have waited for for over half a century since their last participation in 1974 under the name Zaire.
