The iPad Air is about to undergo a major change.

After much speculation, the launch date for the next generation of iPad Airs equipped with OLED displays has been set for early 2027.

According to the latest leaked supply chain report published by ETNews , partner Samsung Display will officially begin mass production of OLED panels for the iPad Air by the end of 2026.

AppleInsider believes this move paves the way for the device's launch in the first half of 2027. Sources familiar with the matter predict the ideal time for the product to hit shelves would be March or May of next year.

The switch to OLED displays was a "double-edged sword" for Apple. When applying this technology to the latest generation of iPad Pro, the high cost of producing the panels directly drove retail prices to record levels.

As a consequence, sales of this high-end tablet line have dropped more sharply than expected due to financial barriers faced by consumers.

For the iPad Air line, which has always dominated sales and been a "cash cow" in the mid-range segment, Apple decided not to repeat this mistake.

Instead of using the super-bright and expensive dual-layer OLED display structure found on the Pro version, Apple will equip the Air series with a single-layer OLED panel with lower specifications.

This change helps Apple minimize production costs, eliminate the risk of retail price increases, while still delivering a superior display experience compared to current LCD screens.

In addition to the M4 processor and OLED display, the new generation iPad Air will also use Apple's own N1 network chip and C1X cellular modem.

With an 8-core CPU and 9-core GPU, Apple promises excellent graphics processing and gaming capabilities thanks to ray-tracing technology that is four times faster than the iPad Air M1.
