Maintaining peak performance is not enough for Mbappe to conquer Europe. |
Kylian Mbappe's Champions League journey this season ended after a defeat in the second leg of the quarter-finals against Bayern Munich on April 16th. This marks the 10th year in the French striker's career in his quest to conquer Europe's most prestigious trophy.

Mbappe is still incredibly unlucky in the Champions League. |
Leaving PSG to join Real Madrid was once seen as the "fastest" path to the Champions League. The Spanish giants boasted 15 titles and had won it four times during Mbappe's time in France. However, reality didn't live up to expectations. In his first two seasons at Madrid, Mbappe failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals.
At 27, he continues to be included in the list of legends who have never won the Champions League, alongside Ronaldo Nazario, Gianluigi Buffon, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. A clear paradox for a player who has scored 70 goals in 98 matches in this competition.
Mbappe's peak in the Champions League came in the exceptional 2020 season, when PSG reached the final in Lisbon. But Kingsley Coman's solitary goal against Bayern Munich dashed his and his teammates' dreams.
While playing for Monaco and PSG, Mbappe reached the semi-finals four times. In contrast, at Real Madrid, he has yet to reach this milestone after two seasons. Before leaving Paris, he also stopped at the semi-finals against Borussia Dortmund, missing the opportunity to participate in the final in London.
Throughout his Champions League campaign, Mbappe has worked with nine different coaches, from Leonardo Jardim to Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, and Arbeloa. This constant change on the coaching bench partly reflects his turbulent journey.
Following Real Madrid's elimination and loss of La Liga title hopes, Mbappe's immediate future remains uncertain. Next season, he will likely embark on his 11th Champions League campaign with a new manager, in an attempt to break the curse that continues to plague his career.
